This photo is from 37 years ago (1974, November) if I have my facts straight. Darryl Sittler is the Leaf--wearing Frank Mahovlich's number--and that's Greg Joly defending. #10 for the Caps is (I believe) Ron Anderson, he had a great mutton-chop hockey card that year. Goalie is either Ron Low or John Adams.I remember that first Capitals team for lots of reasons. Greg Joly was the #1 overall pick after an incredible spring that included his Regina Pats marching all the way to the Memorial Cup. I followed the Pats that spring (they also boasted Clark Gillies and a few others) and thought Joly would have a long, productive career. Not so much. The other item: a HNIC game (and it may have been this one) in which the teams lined up at center ice for a faceoff which was followed mere seconds later by a Dave Keon goal. The Caps defenders had too much of a gap between them (they were close to the boards) and Keon pushed the puck behind the center and had (for all intents and purposes...

Capitals G Vokoun to play vs. Oilers

The Washington Capitals will continue to ride the hot hand on Thursday as goaltender Tomas Vokoun will make the start against the Edmonton Oilers. "Yeah, (coach Bruce Boudreau) told me I'm playing," Vokoun told the team's website on Wednesday. "You wait for the net and when you got it, you prepare. Obviously you prepare if you play or don't, but it'...

Washington's power play back to normal

A surprising weak point for the Washington Capitals last season was their power play. If the first few weeks are any indication, the man advantage has returned to its elite level. In the second half of the 2010-11 season, the Washington Capitals' power play went from one of the best in the league to practically non-existent. From February 2011 through the end of the regular season...

Caps Bid for 82-0 Ends; Lose 2-1

The Capitals were handed their first loss of the seasons Thursday night by the Edmonton Oilers.  Despite showing near-complete domination in the 3rd period, the Caps were unable to overcome a slew of penalties that saw them shorthanded on 8 occasions.  Nikolai Khabibulin didn’t make things any easier for the Caps, making 34 saves on 35 shots and was spectacular when needed....

Hockey, Diminished: Coughing up $100 for a Night of Referee Entertainment

NHL hockey diminishes itself with games like last night’s between the Caps and Oilers. What should have been a highly fast-paced, highly entertaining matchup between a contender today and one that fast appears to be being assembled for the near tomorrow devolved into a whistle-fest parade of rhythm-robbing minor penalties, devaluing the evening for paying patrons and a television...

EDMONTON, ALBERTA - Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 34 of 35 and Jordan Eberle netted his second goal of the season for the eventual game-winner as the Edmonton Oilers took down the Washington Capitals 2-1 Thursday night inside Rexall Place.  Karl Alzner scored the lone goal for the Capitals, who fall to 7-1 on the year with their loss.  Nevertheless, Washington still leads the Southeast...

Nugent-Hopkins staying in NHL, Oilers reveal to no one’s amazement

Huzzah! Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is officially staying in the NHL beyond nine games with the Edmonton Oilers! This comes a complete shock given that (a) he is leading his team in scoring and (b) he flew with the team for Game No. 10 in Denver tonight and (c) his agent told Team 1260 in Edmonton on Friday that "if you look at Ryan's play or look at what the Oilers would describe...

Who would the Caps call from jail

Whom would the Washington Capitals call from jail if they had but one phone call to make? It’s a question that I’d honestly never considered before this week, but the answer seems to be Alex Ovechkin. “My lawyer” did not seem to be an option. Read full article >>
