Dallas Stars (11-4-0, 22 pts) @ Detroit Red Wings (8-5-1, 17 pts)

Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, Michigan
The Stars have a short rest from last night's game as they take on the Detroit Red Wings on the final game in their four-game road trip tonight. Dallas is coming off a tough game last night, one in which they lost Alex Goligoski to a broken thumb for up to 4 weeks.
Things don't get any easier with Dallas going to Joe Lewis Arena. The Wings had a stumble the last couple of weeks, losing six games in a row, but they've turned it around and won their last three games. They've won those three games by a combined margin of 13-2 and shut out two of those teams, the Anaheim Ducks and the Edmonton Oilers.
The Wings have been led by three guys in that three game stretch, Johan Franzen, Jimmy Howard and the ageless Nicklas Lidstrom. Franzen has four goals and three assists while Lidstrom has three goals and an assist during those three game...

Jamie Benn emerging into an NHL star
There were a lot of people who hadn't even heard of Jamie Benn last season. In fact, I picked him up from the free agent list for my fantasy team and since then, Benn has been one of my best players. This year I drafted the young forward in the 8th round at 111th overall in my one year league. The Stars center had 41 points in his first season in the NHL during 2009-10. Then last...
Red Wings Topple the Bulin Wall, Howard Puts Up His Own
The Detroit Red Wings extended their win streak to three last night with Jimmy Howard’s second shutout in three games. Drew Miller, Nick Kronwall and Valtteri Filppula were your goal scorers last night. Jimmy Howard is vaulting up the charts with his stellar play of late. In the Wings current win streak, Howard is 3-0 […] ↓ Read the rest of this entry...

Dallas Stars 1 - Pittsburgh Penguins 3
Coming into this game, I was worried about two things for Dallas. I was worried about Pittsburgh's suffocating defense and how good they were on the power-play. The Penguins used their defense and special teams to beat the Stars 3-1 last night.
Dallas could never really get going in this game and it was apparent from puck drop to...
Howard earns another shutout
Jimmy Howard's name isn't on the NHL All-Star ballot. That didn't prevent him from shining against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night.
Howard had a 24-save shutout to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Oilers 3-0.
He insisted that being snubbed on the ballot, that lists 18 other goalies, doesn't motivate him.
''It doesn't bother me one bit,'&...

CONSOL Energy Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Let me go ahead and get this out of the way, Sidney Crosby won't be playing tonight. Now that tidbit is over so we can move on to the real news; the top two teams in the NHL find themselves on opposite ends of the ice tonight.

G16 Oilers at Red Wings
Playing against the Red Wings hasn't been a fun activity over the years. Bill Gadsby (in photo) was an effective defender in his era, and the man Lidstrom is effective in his own way in the modern era. Lidstrom--whose reputation rivals DiMaggio's in his time--and other important Red Wing players have a major issue to deal with--age. When I was young, Detroit was a clearing...

Babcock: Filppula has the inside track
Mike Babcock's message to Valtteri Filppula has been relentless: Go to the inside, and watch what happens. The Red Wings hold Filppula in high regard because he's about as all-around utilitarian as they come: penalty killer, power-play guy, speedy, great vision, outstanding passes.
Watching how to handle adversity
Cory Emmerton won't be telling Nicklas Lidstrom or Pavel Datsyuk how to play anytime soon. He certainly wouldn't suggest to defenseman Brad Stuart or goal-scorer Johan Franzen to lift their game at any point.
