Found March 06, 2012 on Kukla's Korner:
After going 2-3-1 in their past six games, DET (43-20-3) are now second in the Central Division.  Although even with STL at 89 points, the Blues own the tie-breaker, having one more regulation/overtime win.  The to-be-avoided-at-all-costs 4-5 matchup, today, would see DET opening the playoffs against NSH (2-7 match-up would be against PHX).  Things won’t be easy for the Wings tonight, in addition to JFH being sidelined, the Wings are minus two top-six forwards (Datsyuk, Bertuzzi), and half the regular blueliners (Mr. Norris Trophy, Ericsson, Kindl). The Flyer’s will be offering no sympathy as they too are ravaged on the blueline, missing D Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszeros as well as forward James van Riemsdyk.  Philly are in a dogfight in the Atlantic, trying to catch PIT and avoid being caught by the Devils.  In the more bad news for the Wings department,  Ilya Bryzgalov pitched a 34 save shutout Sunday against the Caps.  Philadelphia goalie coach Jeff Reese said of B...

Flyers' Timonen, Meszaros both out

Philadelphia Flyers defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszaros are out indefinitely with lower-body injuries. Sitting out Sunday night against the Washington Capitals ended Timonen's streak of consecutive games at 248, the Flyers' longest active run. He has two goals and 34 assists in 63 games this season. Meszaros has seven goals and 18 assists in 62 games this season...

Video: Kronwall levels Flyers W with huge hit

Niklas Kronwall’s hit on Jakub Voracek Tuesday night was one that you could feel through the TV. The Red Wings were playing the Flyers in Detroit and almost midway through the second period Kronwall laid the back of his shoulder into the body of Voracek and absolutely crushed him. Voracek got up immediately following the hit but had very little understanding of where he was...

Bryzgalov lives up to billing against Caps

Ilya Bryzgalov's most impressive save Sunday came off the face of Philadelphia Flyers teammate Pavel Kubina. Bryzgalov used his blocker to shrug off the third-period volley initiated by Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, one of 34 saves in the Flyers' 1-0 victory at Verizon Center. More games like this and maybe "embattled" or any other negative adjective...

Red Wings call up Janik (for Kindl), Pearce (for Howard), Conner (for Bertuzzi)

According to MLive’s Ansar Khan, the Detroit Red Wings have officially used all four of their post-trade deadline call-ups as Doug Janik, Jordan Pearce and Chris Conner have been recalled to replace three banged-up Red Wings players—and here’s hoping that Jakub Kindl (“upper-body”), Jimmy Howard (“lower-body”/groin), Todd Bertuzz (groin) and the player that wasn’t...

Flyers To Retire Howe's Number, Take On Banged-Up Red Wings

Injury Report: The Red Wings are a beat-up group. Datsyuk (knee), Lidstrom (ankle), Howard (groin), Bertuzzi (groin), Kindl (upper body) and Jonathan Ericsson (wrist) are all out. … The Flyers will be without defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszaros due to lower-body injuries. Forward James van Riemsdyk will have surgery Tuesday morning on his broken foot, and is expected...

Flyers Beat Washington 1-0 Behind Outstanding Effort By Bryzgalov

Game notes: Ilya Bryzgalov recorded his third shutout of the season.  He is just the third Flyers goaltender to record three shutouts in a season since the lockout (Biron 5, 07-08; Emery 3, 09-10).  The game was the Flyers’ first 1-0 win since Dec. 30, 2007 at Florida (Niittymaki). Claude Giroux took 10 faceoffs tonight, the fewest he’s taken in a game this season.  The Flyers’...

This Day In NHL History: Sens And Flyers Get Physical

On this day eight years ago, the Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators set the NHL record with 419 combined penalty minutes in a single game. All but 22 minutes of that time came with under two minutes to play in the third period.Enforcers, Donald Brashear and Rob Ray got things started when the two squared off in the the Philadelphia zone. When the two were finished and on their...

Flyers retire Mark Howe's No. 2 jersey

The Philadelphia Flyers retired Hall of Famer Mark Howe's jersey prior to Tuesday's game against the Detroit Red Wings. With his father Gordie Howe in attendance, the son saw his No. 2 jersey raised to the rafters at Wells Fargo Center during a ceremony. "It was as if I was born to become a Flyer," said Mark Howe, who is currently a pro scout for the Red Wings...

Red Wings-Flyers wrap-up and overnight report: effort and controversy, yes, results, no

The Detroit Red Wings took a midnight flight back to Detroit to engage in two much-needed days of rest and practicing, especially in terms of the Wings’ lengthy list of injured players (see: Todd Bertuzzi, Jonathan Ericsson, Pavel Datsyuk, Jimmy Howard, Jakub Kindl, Nicklas Lidstrom)  after dropping their 5th of their past 7 games via a spirited but unsuccessful 3-2 loss to the...

The NHL does not like stopping plays when a player like Jakub Voracek is KO'd

Announcer Bill Clement is right on the money as Red Wing Niklas Kronwall KO's Philadelphia Flyer Jakub Voracek. MMA stops the fight when a fighter is out. The NHL? Nope, scoring opportunity cannot be... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~ http://www.bobsblitz.com

Jakub Voracek was blasted last night by Nicklas Kronwall

This is painful to watch.  The Flyers are up in arms about this hit delivered by the Detroit Red Wings Nicklas Kronwall, but it looks relatively clean if you ask me, just the timing was really crappy for Voracek.  He did get him in the head, but it doesn’t appear to be the intent

‘Dorkish’ defined: moron assaults Deaborn councilman for aiding and abetting Blackhawks fans

According to the Denver Post’s Adrian Dater, anyone who cheers for a sports team other than the sports team which represents their geographical locale is a “dorkish” person who is a “bandwagoneer.” Well what’s a person that makes the injury-laden Red Wings’ players, their fans, the organization and the entire Metro Detroit area look as terrible as the person he beat...

Nicklas Grossmann quickly proving his worth as a Flyer

Photo courtesy of Bruce Bennett/Getty Images With less than a minute remaining in a tightly contested battle between the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings, the 6-3, 218 pound forward Johan Franzen tried to manuever into scoring position in front of Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. With one goal already on the night and time winding down, “The Mule,” as he is often called...

Hawks Edge Wings

Yes, this is the third in a row of my “Hawks Edge” series. The two teams again, as they have every time they have faced each other this season, played a game that was decided by one goal. The Hawks took a very hard to get 2 points out of the Joe in Detroit. This is something only a handful of opponents have managed to do this season. Datsyuk & Lidstrom were out for Detroit...
