Wayne Gretzky is considering a return to the ice - well, for the Winter Classic Alumni Game.

After initially dismissing the notion and citing family commitments, the Hall of Famer seems to be softening from his stance that "no one wants to watch a 50-year-old on skates."

"(New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather) called and we talked for 45 minutes," Gretzky told ESPN.com. "I really respect the Rangers doing that. That's classy of Slats, Mike Keenan (who is coaching the Rangers' alumni team) and the Dolan family. So I told Glen I would think about it."

"The Great One" held 40 regular-season NHL records, 15 postseason records and six All-Star records upon his retirement in 1999. In addition, his jersey No. 99 is retired by all 30 NHL teams.

Should he suit up, he'll face former Philadelphia Flyers star Eric Lindros and fellow Legion of Doom linemates John LeClair and Mikael Renberg at Citizens Bank Park on Dec. 31.

A Hart Trophy and Lester B. Pearson Trophy winner with the Flyers, Lindros eventually went on to suit up with the Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars.
