Found December 06, 2011 on Kukla's Korner:
Under the NHL’s realignment plan, what would be the worst nightmare scenario for the Sabres? Actually, it’s already happened. Intradivisional playoffs were in place from 1982-1993, and there are reasons why the scheme was discontinued. The most unfortunate sequence of events with this format that I can remember as a Sabres fan took place in the 1989-90 season.  A young John Tortorella was the assistant head coach to Rick Dudley, Mike Foligno was captain, and a couple of kids named Alexander Mogilny and Rob Ray rode into the NHL courtesy of a vapor trail and a pair of fists, respectively. John Tortorella’s Very Brief Postgame Interview

… the happy Torts over the last dozen or so games was not the Torts that was at the postgame interview last night, rightfully so.  Rangers need to learn how to shut down Toronto, so far they are the only team in the league they are having a lot of trouble with.

Michael Sauer has a concussion

John Tortorella today confirmed to reporters that Michael Sauer did suffer a concussion on that clean hit by Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf Monday night. Tortorella said Sauer is “day to day” and added he doesn’t know the grade of the concussion. Don’t get fooled by the “day to day” designation. I’m not inferring anything other than there’s no way of knowing what Sauer’s...

Rangers’ Sauer has concussion

Rangers coach John Tortorella confirmed what was expected. Defenseman Mike Sauer has been diagnosed with a concussion after taking a substantial hit from Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf in Monday’s 4-2 loss and will miss tonight’s home game against the Lightning. “I don’t know what grade,” Tortorella said...

Rangers confirm Sauer has concussion

Rangers coach John Tortorella confirmed what was expected. Defenseman Michael Sauer has been diagnosed with a concussion and is day-to-day, although Tortorella said he did not know what grade concussion the 24-year-old suffered. Anton Stralman, who has appeared in one game this season, will replace Sauer in the lineup for...

Rangers’ win streak ends at 5

At first glance, last night’s Rangers’ 4-2 defeat to the Maple Leafs at the Garden can be attributed to an especially slow start against an especially fast team. But a closer look reveals that questionable third-period coaching by John Tortorella contributed at least equally to the end of the...

Post-game interviews

Not much to report. No update on Michael Sauer, but you’d have to guess he might have a head injury from that hit, which in my opinion was as clean as it was devastating. John Tortorella, in another short press conference, said it was a clean hit. The Rangers admitted they had a problem with Toronto’s speed, but they’ve handled some fast teams, too. The problem they had was...

Sauer Has A Concussion

This news should not come as a shock, but Andrew Gross is reporting that Mike Sauer indeed has a concussion following the massive hit by Dion Phaneuf in the Rangers 4-2 loss on Monday night (video below). The hit was clean, but Sauer’s helmet came off and he hit his head on the boards, which is the likely cause of the concussion. John Tortorella has said that Sauer is day-to-day...

Happy 20th anniversary, Sabres vs. Flames bench brawl

On Dec. 8, 1991, the Calgary Flames visited the Buffalo Sabres at The Aud in a game many anticipated would be an ill-mannered affair. Calgary defenseman Jamie Macoun had broken the jaw of Sabres star Pat Lafontaine in a Nov. 16 game. Revenge was in the air. At 17:34 of the first period, the teams engaged in one of the most chaotic and lengthy brawls ever seen in the arena -- which...

Slap Shot: Rangers Put Discussion of Boogaard Off Limits

Players and Coach John Tortorella declined to speak substantively about the news that their former enforcer Derek Boogaard, who died last May, was found to have had a degenerative brain disease.

We Chat, Live, at noon … so bring your questions and comments

So, instead of working today between noon and 1, or so, act busy, look annoyed, and join us for a Live Chat right here. Again, please bring questions/comments early, and don’t get annoyed if I can’t retort to each one because last time I was overwhelmed by the response. But we can talk about the realignment, or about the loss to the Leaves, or the five-game winning streak...
