Found October 23, 2013 on New York Sports-Kings:
Islanders forward Michael Grabner has received a two game suspension from the NHL for an illegal check to the head of Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe. The incident occurred at approximately 6:42 of the first period of Carolina’s 4-3 win over the Islanders on Saturday and no penalty was called on the play. The two games he will miss are at home Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks and a game Friday in Pittsburgh against the Penguins. The suspension very well could have been a lot more severe if it weren’t for the fact that Gerbe was okay and Grabner has no past history of suspensions.   In my opinion, a two game suspension is probably pretty secure. The hit wasn’t super brutal and Gerbe wasn’t seriously injured but it sets the precedent that shots to the head won’t be tolerated no matter how minimal they may look.   Make sure to like us on facebook and follow us on twitter for your latest in New York sports news! Brian Strait Hurt, Martinek in Against Pittsburgh

Brian Strait is day-to-day with an upper body injury and will miss tomorrow’s game against Pittsburgh. That leaves the Islanders with six defenders so Radek Martinek will make his season debut tomorrow night.

Brock Nelson, Matt Donovan to fill in for Grabner, Visnovsky

Jack Capuano will be shuffling his roster for Tuesday night's visit from the Canucks though not by choice. Lubomir Visnovsky went on injured reserve after suffering a concussion in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Hurricanes. Michael Grabner was issued a two-game suspension for a check to the head of Carolina's Nathan Gerbe in the same game. Grabner's spot will be taken...

Isles backup Kevin Poulin may get the call soon

Most of the Islanders wait roughly two minutes to see action. Two or three line shifts and the skaters come over the boards and into the fray. Kevin Poulin whose job description is "backup goalie" sat for seven days before he was called to be Evgeni Nabokov's proxy (a 3-2 loss to Chicago) and since has waited another 13 days. With back-to-back games coming this week...

Dee Karl: Isles Game Day: Filling Holes

With Lubo Visnovsky out with a concussion and Michael Grabner being punished, the Isles line-up has a few holes in it. But Jack Capuano has no real problems filling them. This morning at practice, Newsday's Art Staple has informed us that Capuano has decided Andrew MacDonald will take Visnovsky spot on the first power play unit. Nabby nixed? Capuano says if Poulin ‘plays well, he’s going to play more’

The Islanders' maddening inconsistency reared its head again Tuesday with two blown leads one late rally and a 5-4 overtime loss to the Canucks leaving the Isles at 3-3-3 for the season. That record is a perfect summation of the team to date: Not good enough to be ahead of the pack and yet not bad enough to be in need of an overhaul. "Losing games like that kind of tells...

Dan Petriw: The Bridgeport Report with Phil Giubileo

We will get into the Islanders more tomorrow as we all sound like broken records with the same issues costing them points on a nightly basis. The defense struggled again last night and the goaltending was just downright bad. It is good to see Matt Moulson get himself right and Brock Nelson finding the back of the net was great to see. I had the chance though to sit down with...

A Spano Story: Review of ESPN's 30 for 30 film "Big Shot"

When you're able to make Mike Milbury, famously abrasive hockey analyst, a sympathetic figure over the course of a 90-minute documentary, well, you've certainly accomplished something. Unfortunately for ESPN and Kevin Connolly, the latest installment of their 30 for 30 series profiling former Islanders owner and professional con artist John Spano, that's just about...
