Islanders forward Michael Grabner has received a two game suspension from the NHL for an illegal check to the head of Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe. The incident occurred at approximately 6:42 of the first period of Carolina’s 4-3 win over the Islanders on Saturday and no penalty was called on the play. The two games he will miss are at home Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks and a game Friday in Pittsburgh against the Penguins. The suspension very well could have been a lot more severe if it weren’t for the fact that Gerbe was okay and Grabner has no past history of suspensions. In my opinion, a two game suspension is probably pretty secure. The hit wasn’t super brutal and Gerbe wasn’t seriously injured but it sets the precedent that shots to the head won’t be tolerated no matter how minimal they may look.
