It wasn’t just Eddie Lack’s solid start to his first National Hockey League season that persuaded the Vancouver Canucks to sign him to a two-year contract extension. There was also the fact that Lack would have become a Group 6 unrestricted free agent next summer if had he not played a total of 28 NHL games this season. The Canucks did not want to gamble and potentially lose Lack next summer and Lack wanted to stay. It didn’t take assistant general manager Laurence Gilman and Lack’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, long to strike a deal. Lack’s two-year deal will pay him $1 million next season and $1.3 million in 2015-16. The deal carries an annual salary cap hit of $1.15 million. Lack is making $750,000 this year. The contract was signed after Thursday night’s game and announced by the Canucks on Friday. Lack, who is always smiling, had an even wider grin than normal on Friday. “I know I have a lot of hard work in front of me to stay in his league and keep performing at a high level, b...

Vancouver Canucks: deal or no deal?

As the Vancouver Canucks offence has shriveled up and gone AWOL there has been mounting pressure on Mike Gillis to make a deal; from both the “pretend” and real media alike, and even more so from the fans. The preferred target of any deal would of course be an impact forward that could play in Vancouver’s top six or if they can’t land that, a third line center. There are...

Make a deal Mike! Gillis needs to act now!

Canucks need to upgrade offense ASAP The biggest problem facing the Vancouver Canucks this season is the same issue that has shown up the last two years in the playoffs – not enough goals. Production has been fine from the Sedins and Ryan Kesler but those three make up almost 35 per cent of the Canucks total goals this year. Vancouver has received some nice production early on...

Should the Canucks be Buying

It appears that the shiny glimmer of promise for all teams has officially started to fade for some clubs in the NHL.  The Vancouver Canucks are playing one of them tonight, the Florida Panthers.  The Panthers have already traded away one of their top 6 forwards, Kris Versteeg, to the Chicago Blackhawks for younger players for the future.  The Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and...

Coach’s Challenge in the NHL?

The talk around town after the Vancouver Canucks dropped their 4th straight game in a row hasn’t been about the team’s performance but about whether coaches should have the ability to challenge a call on the ice, similar to the NFL.  The NHL has done a good job of embracing video reviews and is definitely not behind like the curve like FIFA and MLB, but I don’t think the NHL...

Canucks Blame Game – Vancouver falls 2-1 to Dallas

One goal does not a win make A goaltender interference call has seemed to distract Vancouver Canucks fans from the real problem – Vancouver can’t score. And they proved it last night, only managing to score one (official) goal in a 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Sunday. Sure, it was a brutal call but good teams find ways to win and I’m not so sure the Canucks can be considered...

Weise hopes to infuse energy into Canucks lineup

Dale Weise is an energy guy, both on and off the ice. “I got on the music this morning, trying to get the boys a little pumped up,” explained the Vancouver Canucks fourth-line winger after practice on Monday at Rogers Arena. “We had the techno going. You’ll have to ask [Zack] Kassian exactly who it was. He tried to call it ‘Techno Tuesday.’ I’m not sure he knew what...

Canucks have plenty of chances, no results

The Vancouver Canucks put three pucks in the net behind Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen on Sunday. But since one was pushed in from behind by Brad Richardson when the net tilted forward on its pegs, we'll say the Canucks scored twice. Referee Rob Martell, however, thought only one goal was good, and for the struggling Canucks one goal isn't enough. The Stars beat them 2-1 as...

Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks Game Review: The Missed Call; Weber on Waivers

Sunday November 17 Dallas Stars 2 - Vancouver Canucks 1 Here are your highlights from Sunday's bad-luck loss to the Dallas Stars: A weird night started out on an upside-down note when nine-year-old singer Lily Cave reversed the order of the national anthems, singing "O Canada" first and following it up with "The Star-Spangled Banner." She nailed...

Stars hold off Canucks 2-1

Kari Lehtonen made 42 saves and the Dallas Stars defeated the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 on Sunday. Valeri Nichushkin and Erik Cole scored for Dallas (11-7-2), which was coming off a 7-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday and extended its road winning streak to six games. Henrik Sedin scored for Vancouver (11-8-3), which got 21 saves from Roberto Luongo as the Canucks dropped...

Roberto Luongo, Tim Thomas set to meet again

Let the tire pumping begin. Canuck netminder Roberto Luongo couldn't help but poke fun at himself on his twitter account Monday as he prepared to face the Florida Panthers and old nemesis Tim Thomas. Under his @strombone1 handle, Luongo wrote: “Just at Canadian Tire picking up a few essentials for tomorrow's big tilt...” Included in the tweet was a photo of an air pump...

Stu’s Reality Check

EVERYBODY PANIC!!!! (seriously, we’re in trouble): Riding high after a 4-0 drubbing of the hated Leafs, a tough OT loss in Phoenix, and finally beating the Sharks, it was starting to look like this Canucks team would leave all of us who had wailed about the lack of offensive improvement and derided this team’s chances of getting anywhere this season with egg on our faces, thus...

Morning Line

“I don’t go to the games, I don’t feel welcome there. I don’t question that. It’s people running a business and it’s been a very successful business.” -Pat Quinn on the Vancouver Canucks organization.  More from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province.

NHL power rankings: Week 7

The Iceman Cometh Winger Kris Versteeg loves playing for the Chicago Blackhawks. He didnt make a mark in Toronto, Philadelphia or Florida. But Versteeg scored a goal and added an assist in his second game back with the Blackhawks after the Panthers shipped him to Chicago. "It was cool," teammate Patrick Sharp told reporters about Versteeg's return. "The crowd...
