Many fans were upset with the Lightning acquisition of Senators’ goalie Ben Bishop. They took to social media and local sports talk radio to voice their displeasure with the move. Perhaps what the Bolts gave up for Bishop also contributed to the uproar by many. However, the general thought around the league is that both teams benefited equally. I reached out to Dean Brown, Senators’ play by play man on Team 1200 in Ottawa, to shed some light from his perspective on Bishop and the trade. I have been watching the response in Tampa to the trade and there are some who wanted and expected a big name goaltender to solve Tampa’s problems. With all due respect to those fans,  I would disagree.  Of all the achievable goaltending options out there (Luongo-bad contract, Kiprusoff-retirement, Mason-confidence issues) I think Yzerman made by far the best deal. Brown also touched on Bishop’s character and work ethic. Bishop is a pro.  Never complained in St.Louis,  never complained in Ottawa when he had to share the net with Robin Lehner.  He is the biggest goaltender in the history of the NHL and has worked very hard to tune the technical side of his game in the last 3 years. Brown also feels Bishop can have a very good future with the Bolts. I believe Bishop could be the #1 goalie in Tampa for the next 10 years,  and when next they make the playoffs it will be Bishop who gets them there. From all media accounts, local and national, the general consensus is the Lightning did great to boost their future success. At the end of the day, credit must be given to general manager Steve Yzerman for pulling the trigger on a deal of this magnitude. Dean Brown agrees. “Any criticism Yzerman is taking right now is both unfair and premature,” Brown stated. And with a trade like this, after the rave reviews the Lightning have received for it, Brown could be spot on. Validating that Tampa Bay did in fact make the best deal by far.
