The Under-18 World Championship is taking place in Estonia, with group play still in the round robin portion of the tournament. On Wednesday two hockey powerhouses took to the ice, as Lithuania and Great Britain squared off, with the Brits coming out on top 3-2. A strange and troubling incident occurred shortly after the final horn sounded, as Lithuania’s Danielius Nomanovas, obviously upset at the outcome, wound up and whipped his stick right at one of the referees, hitting the official in the shoulder and causing him to briefly drop to one knee. One of the Great Britain players goes after the stick chucking Lithuanian, but the same ref, who moments earlier was on the receiving end of a flying hockey stick, quickly broke them up. Now comes the big question—did the Lithuanian player intentionally hit the ref, or was it purely an accident, a moment of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Tough to determine, but intentional or not, I don’t see how Nomanovas avoids some sort of penalty for his careless, and potentially dangerous, stick throwing. Even though these kids are under 18-years-old, you would expect them to show a little more  maturity and common sense than this, wouldn’t you?
