Another playoff-less season, more rumours surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs. This time it’s not about acquiring a big-name centre or strong defensive defenceman, but rather if the Maple Leafs should deal their first round draft pick.

In case you’re not aware, the Leafs could end up selecting as high as first overall this summer with more losses and some luck.

Those in favour of the Leafs holding on to the selection will be happy to know that, according to James Mirtle of The Globe and Mail, Leafs general manager Brian Burke is “inclined” to keep his first round draft pick this year. From Mirtle:

While there’s a sizable contingent of the Leafs fan base that is worried that Leafs GM Brian Burke will move the pick for more immediate help, he said this week it’s more likely they keep it.

Even if other GMs are already calling him about it.

“[We're] inclined to keep the pick,” Burke said, “but listening [to offers] already.”

Those closely following this year’s NHL draft class have been quick to point out that the likes of Alex Galchenyuk, Filip Forsberg and Mikhail Grigorenko would all fit nicely on the Leafs’ roster, although none would be likely to play in the NHL next season and Grigorenko would need to fall all the way down from the two spot.

This year’s NHL Entry Draft takes place on June 22 and 23 in Pittsburgh.
