John Carlson, please take a seat next to Evander Kane -- you've just been inducted into a very elite club. The club? None other than The Boston Chapter's Anti-Cooke Club, which Kane founded in 2010 after knocking out Matt Cooke just a month after the Pittsburgh pugilist tried his hardest to end Marc Savard's hockey career with a blindside elbow to the head. On Thursday night, Carlson decked Cooke with a high hit in the closing seconds of the Penguins' 2-1 win over the Capitals, as seen in the videos below.

Pens beat Caps in regulation for first time since March of 2008 Follow me on Twitter @JohnToperzer Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson lit Matt Cooke up with a questionable hit in the late seconds of Pittsburgh’s 2-1 win Thursday. You can view the hit here. There were only four seconds remaining in regulation and the puck was in the Washington end, but no penalty...

Dale Hunter’s First Two Games as Washington Capitals Head Coach

All eyes were on the ice when the Washington Capitals squared off against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, November 30th.  It was their first game under new head coach Dale Hunter.  Hunter had just been named as the replacement for Bruce Boudreau; a man who had reached 200 career wins as a head coach faster than anyone else in history, the day before — not much time to make many...

Capitals' Roman Hamrlik a healthy scratch against Penguins

Roman Hamrlik's play has raised the ire of fans for being responsible when opponents score on the Washington Capitals. His minus-10 rating and 18 penalty minutes haven't helped. On Thursday, the 37-year-old's seat was in the press box as a healthy scratch for the first time this season. "It's feeling," ...

Jay Beagle's return to the ice a welcome sight for Capitals

Jay Beagle was just itching to get back onto the ice. The Washington Capitals' forward hasn't played in a game since Oct. 13 when he suffered a concussion in a fight with Arron Asham, and it had been three weeks since he last skated. Then came Friday night and Saturday ...

Is Nicklas Backstrom This Season's MVP?

Through 23 games, the team's number one center is the leading scorer, even if his plus/minus isn't impressive.  He is coming off a sub-par season after a 30+goal, 101-point season the year before.  As a top draft pick, he has the pedigree and potential to take over games, and indeed, the entire NHL. The team isn't doing too bad in the grand scheme of things, still in...

Capitals' Alexander Semin scratched with bum shoulder, considered day-to-day

Alexander Semin stood by himself along the boards while his Washington Capitals teammates did line rushes at Saturday's morning skate. He stayed out on the ice with the young guys — Mathieu Perreault and Cody Eakin — well after everyone else jumped off. But he wasn't taking shots or any ...

Boudreau aims to boost Ducks' confidence

Three days after the Washington Capitals fired him, Bruce Boudreau was in another rink on the other side of the continent, back at work on another NHL salvage job.

Offense is hard to come by for Capitals as they drop fourth straight, 2-1 to Penguins

If two games are a fair indication, the Washington Capitals under Dale Hunter will play a lot of low-scoring, one-goal games. Goaltender Tomas Vokoun thinks it's better this way. "One week we're scoring seven goals, the next week giving up five, six," he said. "You know what you're going to ...

NHL coaches again on the hot seat

Alex Ovechkin has dropped from MVP seasons to an ordinary one for Washington. In Carolina, Eric Staal is stuck in a seasonlong slump. Two of the NHL's best players get the rest of the season to try to turn around their numbers and revert to form. Their coaches weren't so lucky.
