Veteran forward Milan Lucic has a new contract. Lucia is now a member of the Boston Bruins and is locked in for next year. Furthermore, Lucic will have an AAV of $1 million.
Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins have given Milan Lucic a contract. He is returning to where it all began. Lucic was once a core piece for the Bruins and helped the team capture the Stanley Cup in 2011. However, those prime years are long gone, but a reunion has occurred.
Lucic has been rumoured to be reuniting with the club for quite some time. That rumour has now come to life. Since being traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 2015, Lucic has spent time with the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. Throughout his career, Lucic has hit the 60-point plateau twice and 50 point plateau three times. However, production is not his strong suit anymore. Lucic has not scored more than ten goals since 2016-17 and has not hit the 30-point mark in the last five seasons. This past season, Lucic scored seven goals and 19 points.
Bringing back Milan Lucic does not make much sense. However, it does fit a need. The mould of this core group is aiming to get younger. Bringing in an aging veteran does not fit that bill. However, it is the intangibles that make this count. Lucic is never afraid to stand up for his teammates, and his veteran leadership presence will come through. In addition, he has over 1000 games under his belt.
Lucic will more than likely play a fourth-line role. With the departure of Nick Foligno and Garnet Hathaway heading to market, Lucic replaces them at a much cheaper cost. It will remain to be seen if the younger guys in Providence seize the role, but for now, it belongs to Lucic.
Milan Lucic is entering the back end of his career. At this point in his career, it is about playing and playing the game he loves the most. The best part for Lucic is he gets to return to the place where it all began. For the Bruins 100th anniversary, this is one way to kick things off.
