Before Sunday's NHL game in Montreal, the Canadiens paid tribute to former Montreal Expos catcher Gary Carter, who passed away Thursday at the age of 57. Carter was the first player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with the Montreal Expos logo on his cap.

The Bell Centre went dark and still pictures of Gary Carter were shown on the ice as the PA announcer summarized highlights of Carter's career. A montage of video highlights of Carter was then shown on the scoreboard to the music of The Eagles classic "New Kid in Town", as a tribute to Carter's nickname "Kid".

Montreal Expos mascot Youppi then made a surprise appearance on the ice as the crowd applauded, and the tribute finished with a moment of silence.

The visiting team goaltender, New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, showed some emotion on the ice. Brodeur grew up in Montreal, and Martin's father Denis was the Montreal Expos team photographer. Gary Carter came to the Brodeur household frequently and the family considered him a close friend.
