Three things to watch:
1. Battle for 8th seed in the East
The Eastern Conference playoff race has gotten a lot more interesting in the last few days. Five teams – Winnipeg, Washington, Tampa Bay, Buffalo and Toronto – are all within three points of each other from seeds 8 through 12. Tonight will be a big game in this race. With a regulation win the Sabres can move into a tie with the Jets for the 8th seed.
2. Suddenly-surging Sabres
How have the Sabres put themselves in a position to tie Winnipeg tonight? They’ve taken advantage of an average conference by surging into 11th in the East with a 6-0-1 stretch in their last seven games. Ryan Miller has been spectacular in net, while the offense is getting contributions from all around.
3. Winnipeg’s power play
The Jets are 3-1-2 in their last six games, thanks in part to their white-hot man advantage. The power play unit has vaulted to seventh in the league after a 10-for-26 (38.5%) run in the aforementioned six-game stretch. They’ll be facing a Buffalo penalty kill that his killed off its last 11 power plays against.

Final thoughts: The Sabres have won three in a row, while Claude Noel’s Jets are coming off a dominant 7-0 victory over Florida on Thursday. This game could easily go either way. I’ll take Winnipeg on home-ice. Prediction: Jets 2, Sabres 1 (OT)
