The Buffalo Sabres have dealt Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders in exchange for Matt Moulson, a first round pick in 2014 and a second round pick in 2015. The move comes as the Sabres are sputtering in the Atlantic Division and amidst persisting trade rumors surrounding several players on the Buffalo roster.
The trade, as confirmed by Newsday, is a fascinating development for both teams and removes arguably the best forward from the trade block. At this time the New York Islanders still need to reach a contract extension with Vanek who becomes a UFA at the end of the year.
Talk about a surprising trade. We all expected Vanek would be moved sooner than later, but it's doubtful any analyst or expert has the Isles as his destination. Reportedly the two sides did not engage in any negotiations prior to the actual trade.
Vanek is a big acquisition for the Islanders and they paid dearly for him. However, the move is a bit puzzling. So far in 2013-14 the Islanders have be...

As the New York Islanders try to take the next step towards being a contender, they made a shocking trade tonight. In an effort to shake things up and to give franchise centerpiece John Tavares a worthy line mate, the Islanders acquired Thomas Vanek from the Buffalo Sabres.
This certainly was not a trade that anyone expected. Per this report from ESPN, Vanek was acquired for forward...
Over the last 36-or-so hours, hockey pundits have dedicated a significant amount of bandwidth to dissecting the Thomas Vanek-Matt Moulson trade, attempting to discern whether either player has a long-term future with their new respective employers, or whether the New York Islanders or Buffalo Sabres "won" the trade.

The Buffalo Sabres have traded Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders for Matt Moulson, 1st round pick in 2014, and a 2nd round pick in 2015.
At first glance, this trade seems like a steal for the Sabres. While Vanek and Moulson are close in age ( Vanek is three months younger ), Vanek has played in 265 more games than Moulson and has 130 more goals. However, when you compare...
The era of Thomas Vanek has ended and the welcoming back of Lindy Ruff for a night begins.
The fans woke up today and processed the best player on the teams’ departure for Long Island last night. Let’s make one thing clear: management asked Vanek point-blank “are you willing to sign in Buffalo past this season?” To show him their commitment, they would have made him...

This was an attempt to start a rebuilding process with both of them being free agents at the end of the season. Sunday night the process was sent in motion as […]
