So if and when play does begin in the NHL this season, there might be some new rules that target frequent mitt-droppers such as the Bruins Shawn Thornton and the New York Rangers Brandon Prust.

According to Puck Daddy the NHL could possibly adopt the OHL’s rules that target frequent fighters to stricter penalties and suspensions for their actions. The proposed rule by OHL commissioner David Branch goes like this- Players are allowed to fight up to 10 times without any backlash from the league. Once the player get fighting major 11-15 he will be suspended two games per fight, the same goes for fights 16-20 as well as a $1,000 fine each time.

One important thing that shouldn’t be left out is the instigator rule. If the opposing player is assessed an instigator penalty the it will not count towards the players total. But if the the player who was assessed the instigator penalty was above the 10 game limit then he will be issued an automatic 4 game suspension.

The Bruins will have to be particularly cautious of this rule as Shawn Thornton was one of only two players last year who fought at least 20 times.

Now for all you blood-thirsty hockey lovers who automatically hate this new rule, i should state that the NHL has not instituted it yet, but it is something that they are going to keep a close eye as it progresses in the OHL.
