The season is over, and the Stanley Cup has been awarded. But the NHL still has some hardware to hand out.  In just a few days the NHL will hand out the Calder, Hart, Norris, Vezina and Jack Adams Trophy at the NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The league’s best players will invade Sin City, and will wait for the crowning of the NHL’s best rookie, head coach, defenseman, goalie and most valuable player.Over the next few days we’ll give you an inside look at who should win and why. Today, the Norris Trophy. The Norris Trophy, NHL’s Best DefensemanCandidates:Zdeno Chara, Boston BruinsErik Karlsson, Ottawa SenatorsShea Weber, Nashville PredatorsWho will win:This category is possibly the hardest to decide. The award is suppose to go to the defenseman who all season demonstrates the best all-around game. This would include both the play in his team’s own end and the play at the offensive side of the ice. This definition does not make it any easier. All three players had stellar offensiv...

Senators, D Karlsson agree to 7-year extension

The Ottawa Senators say they have agreed to terms with Norris Trophy finalist Erik Karlsson on a seven-year contract extension. The deal was announced by the team on Tuesday, one day before Karlsson will find out if he was picked as the NHL's top defenseman for the recently completed season. Karlsson will reportedly earn $45.5 million over the course of the new contract. The...

Ottawa's Erik Karlsson wins Norris Trophy

Ottawa's Erik Karlsson won his first Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman on Wednesday night. The 22-year-old Swede beat out Boston's Zdeno Chara and Nashville's Shea Weber in a close vote, moderately surprising the crowd at the league's annual postseason awards show at the Wynn Las Vegas casino. Karlsson led all defensemen with 78 points in his breakout...

Erik Karlsson's Norris Trophy Win Shows Little Regard for Defense in Voting for NHL's Best Defenseman

For the most part, the NHL and the writers, broadcasters and team executives who vote on the league's annual awards acquitted themselves well Wednesday night. The writers of the hackneyed material given the presenters to read? Not so much. But the 2012 NHL Awards did produce one genuine, albeit unintentional, bit of comedy when Erik Karlsson was named the Norris Trophy winner...

Zdeno Chara Has The Best Raw Corsi

Yesterday I posted the top 20 players in 2011/12 by their Corsi rating.  Heading the list is Zdeno Chara.  That is a success of Corsi ratings.  Chara is a very good hockey player.  I think he is the best defenceman in hockey.  He is a Norris Trophy nominee and is my pick as the most deserving winner.  There is a realistic possibility that Shea Weber wins the award because...

Erik Karlsson Cashes in With Huge New Deal As Ottawa Makes Norris Finalist One of Highest Paid Defensemen in NHL

Erik Karlsson will still have to look up at his fellow Norris Trophy finalists, but the young Senators defenseman at least will soon have a wallet just as big. Karlsson, a 6-foot, 180-pound 22-year-old, gives away four inches and 52 pounds to Nashville's Shea Weber and nine inches and 75 pounds to Boston's Zdeno Chara, but they will be on equal footing Wednesday night in...

The Norris Trophy Is Now A Sham

Nice shirt Karlsson, you fruit. The NHL "awarded" Erik Karlsson with the Norris Trophy last night and proved to the world that the trophy, much like the people who vote on said trophy, is nothing more than a joke. Now, I know I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for that statement, but I completely stand by it. Erik Karlsson is not a Norris Trophy worthy candidate...

With NHL Awards on Wednesday, Poile predicts Weber will take Norris Trophy

On Wednesday, the National Hockey League will hand out its annual achievement awards. For the second consecutive season, the Nashville Predators are nominated for four trophies. For the third straight, David Poile is up for General Manager of the Year. Pekka Rinne and Shea Weber are each nominated for second consecutive seasons for tops in their respective positions, and Mike Fisher...

Thursday Cornucopia of Sens News

Last night I posted some of the PHWA voting totals for the NHL Awards that the Senators’ players and Paul MacLean were finalists for. Well, as it turns out, a few of Ottawa’s other players also received some votes, so I’m going to take the time to acknowledge these votes.   GM Bryan Murray was rewarded with two second place votes and four third place votes for the job...

NHL names First, Second All-Star Teams

From the NHL: NHL ANNOUNCES 2011-12 ALL-STAR TEAMS LAS VEGAS (June 20, 2012)—Center Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins and defenseman Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators have been voted to the First All-Star Team for the third and second time, respectively, as the National Hockey League today released voting results for its postseason All-Star Teams. Malkin received First...

You Think Weber Got Snubbed…Imagine How Mike Green Feels.

Photo by:  Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators was once again by the slimmest of margins not voted the winner of the Norris Trophy for Best ALL AROUND Defenseman. The award went to Erik Karlsson who had an outstanding year offensively to lead all other defensemen by 25 points. Many would argue that Karlsson does not play the “all around” game that...
