Courtney Sacco, The Ann Arbor News The National Hockey League got out its handy dandy calculator to figure out that $30 million in revenue minus $10 million in expenses amounts to $20 million in profits.  That’s what the NHL earned in profit at the 2014 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium on January 1st. This really shouldn’t be a huge surprise as the game between the Red Wings and and Maple Leafs had a record-breaking 105,491 fans.  According to Sports Business Daily, the average ticket price of $186 for an estimated take of $19.6 million. Another $10 million in revenue came from retail and advertising sales. The $10 million in expenses included $3 million, which was paid to the University of Michigan to rent Michigan Stadium for four weeks. The other main expense was the set-up and maintenance of the rink, which is owned by the NHL and will be used at some of the games in the upcoming Stadium Series. The $20 million takeaway also set a record, breaking the $15 million profit from the 2012 Winter Classic when the Philadelphia Flyers hosted the New York Rangers at Citizens Bank Park. If you remember (or if you don’t remember), the Leafs beat the Wings 3-2 in a shootout.
