Definitely a good idea and something that will gain some laughs if it ever becomes mainstream enough.  But, it is worth noting that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is just doing what the Owners want him to do and it is not entirely his fault. That being said, it was reported earlier Tuesday that the Winter Festival that was set to take place at Comerica Park is going to be cancelled along with the Winter Classic.  The Winter Festival was going to include some Junior Hockey games, the Great Lakes Invitational college hockey tournament which includes Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech and Western Michigan, and also the alumni hockey games involving Red Wings and Maple Leafs alumni. Here is the official schedule of what will be cancelled:GREAT LAKES INVITATIONALDec. 27 – 3:30 pmGame 1 - Michigan State vs. Western Michigan Game 2 - Michigan vs. Michigan TechDec. 28 – 3:30 pmGame 3 - Consolation Game Game 4 - Championship Game .ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE DOUBLEHEADER Dec. 29 – 1:00 pmGame 5 - Windsor Spitfires vs. Saginaw Spirit Game 6 - Plymouth Whalers vs. London Knights .AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE Dec. 30 – 7:00 pmGame 7 - Grand Rapids Griffins vs. Toronto Marlies .2012 MAPLE LEAFS vs. RED WINGS ALUMNI SHOWDOWN™ Dec. 31 – TBDGame 8 - Maple Leafs Alumni vs. Red Wings Alumni (Game 1)Game 9 - Maple Leafs Alumni vs. Red Wings Alumni (Game 2)It’s a shame that everything is falling a part regarding the Winter Classic because of the lockout, and it is supposed to be officially cancelled on Thursday.  We will just have to wait and see what exactly will happen, but there is little reason to be optimistic it will be anything good.H/T: Puck Daddy Blog

Video: Gary Bettman on Halloween

Gary Bettman won't be handing out any Halloween candy this year. He still hasn't figured out how to unlock his front door. Instead, he'll be taking to the streets to join in on the trick-or-treating. "I'm Gary Bettman and I can do whatever I want!" We always imagined Bettman was shorter in real life and more difficult to understand.  Props to...

Should Bettman be locked out?

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will stand at a podium at some point and announce the end of his sport's latest work stoppage. It will be the third time he has done so. The first work stoppage resulted in the loss of nearly half the 1994-95 season, the second in all of the 2004-05 season. Hopefully, the third work stoppage will result in only a slightly truncated schedule. Afterward...

Counting On Bettman

from Christopher Botta of SportsBusiness Journal at The Sporting News, Experienced league-side executives refuse to count out Bettman, no matter how long this third lockout drags on. Robert Caporale, an alternate governor for the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1991-97, said much the same. “Gary has to lead 30 owners who, quite frankly, are not used to being led in their other...

Will Gary Bettman mask corrupt kids this Halloween? (Video)

According to this video, inspired by the NHL lockout, wearing a mask of Commissioner Gary Bettman for Halloween entitles you to do whatever you want, including taking more than your fair share of candy. Popout That's not cool. Please, kids, when it comes to candy this Halloween, show some respect and just take one. Video via. H/T Puck Daddy. Visit us at http://holdoutsports...

How The Grinch Stole Hockey Featuring Gary Buttman (Bettman)

A.B. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman needs to follow NBA commissioner David Stern’s move an announce his upcoming retirement. Every day that passes without hockey is another nail in the NHL’s coffin. The deeper we get into the NBA season and the closer we get to the NFL playoffs, the less people usually care about hockey. But without a season at all – people may even forget about...

Upset About The NHL Lockout? Shoot Gary Bettman With A Gun

Here are three quotes from Puck Daddy’s “oh my God, did you seriously put NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s picture on the targets at your firing range” interview with DVC Indoor Shooting Center manager Wes Yen that put the story in its proper context:“It seems to be one of our more popular targets. It’s actually been a pretty big hit for us.”“I guess not. It’s an...

Does Any Side Care About The Game?

from Scott Burnside of ESPN, The players are busy playing all over the world and attacking commissioner Gary Bettman on Twitter, as are the owners with trying to set up secret chats with the players and spending all of 10 minutes going over the players' latest proposals. So maybe it has escaped both sides that outside their tidy little bubble the give-a-hoot factor about...

Is The Game “Bulletproof” In Toronto And Detroit?

from Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun, Not to be a contrarian here, but all the gnashing of teeth over the National Hockey League’s reported intention to cancel the Bridgestone Winter Classic later this week is completely misplaced. If the league does it, it won’t be despite the fact that it was Toronto versus Detroit, two storied franchises, a first inclusion of a Canadian...

Senators 1, Rangers 0 (Faux Game 8)

In an effort to lighten the mood during the lockout, The New York Rangers Blog will be writing faux recaps for every Rangers game missed due to the work stoppage. Enjoy. Kanata, ON - Hurricane Sandy is not only wreaking havoc on the east coast of the United States, it's affecting the NHL schedule as well. The megastorm has grounded the Rangers in Carolina, so they were...

Impossible To Grow The Game

from Rory Boylen of The Hockey News, A major struggle the NHL has faced in its history is transitioning from a niche sport to a big-league show that attracts fans from markets that can’t sustain an outdoor rink. But the biggest reason this has been such a mammoth struggle is, well, the NHL itself. In the “non-traditional” hockey markets, the option to play while growing...

No White Flag Waving

from Dan Oldfield at CBC, Both parties are taking stock, keeping an eye on their stakeholders, and envisioning ways to get out of their current situation. It will not be easy. The biggest single problem? The players simply cannot accept the owners’ offer. To do so this time would ultimately mean the end of the NHLPA. To accept the offer would clearly demonstrate that...

Repeat After Me

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC, Does any of this sound familiar? A commissioner saying there are "enormous consequences at play ... we think that we made very fair proposals." Was that Gary Bettman two weeks ago? No, it was David Stern in October 2011. "Our indication today to go to a 50-50 deal demonstrates even more potential movement on our part...
