Just get rid of the skates, cover the ice with grass and call it soccer. While the 2012-2013 NHL season remains on the brink of extinction, negotiations do continue and one of the new developments is the expansion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Yes, a professional sports league that already has more than half of their teams qualifying for the playoffs, is thinking about adding an addition 4 teams. Why would they even consider this? Money, of course. This thought process is also part the 4-conference realignment. Here is what ProHockeyTalk’s Jason Brough points out This would have two advantages. First, the additional games would provide additional revenue. Second, more teams in the playoff race theoretically means fewer fans giving up on their teams during the regular season. I understand wanting to keep fan interest, but this is absurd. The NHL should seriously think about adopting a round-robin type scheduling at this point, similar to what professional soccer leagues use in Europe. When 20 of the 30 teams reach the playoffs, you are entering into “everyone gets a trophy” territory. You want to keep fan interest? Shorten the season.
