The Montreal Canadiens have every intent to re-sign restricted free agent defenseman P.K. Subban. They have made him multiple offers, and have reportedly increased the amounts each time. Still, Subban is reluctant to sign for what Montreal is offering.

Like sharks who smell blood in the water, the Philadelphia Flyers have pounced on the situation.

The Flyers are desperate to upgrade their blue line. With Chris Pronger, Andrej Meszaros and Andreas Lilja out to start the season – unless the looming NHL Lockout wipes out more games than anyone is hoping – Philadelphia has worked the phones feverishly to get a deal done.

After they failed to acquire Shea Weber, who had the offer sheet from the Flyers matched by the Nashville Predators, Philadelphia has placed quite a few phone calls to countless teams in an effort to bolster their defense.

Unfortunately for them, they have been unsuccessful.

I feel that may be the case with this latest development as well.

The Canadiens are not looking to shop Subban. They are looking to lock him up for the long term. While he has rejected numerous offers by Montreal, it is still widely expected by most around the league that the Canadiens will eventually up their offer enough to convince Subban to re-sign. With him still being a restricted free agent, the Canadiens are not desperate at this point if a deal cannot get done soon.

Ultimately, no, Subban has not re-signed with the Canadiens. He has rejected a two year deal worth around $6 million, and still has not signed a three year deal worth over $12 million. And yes, the Flyers have called to inquire about his availability.

But no, that does not mean that a deal is anywhere near being consummated.

It may be nothing more than a pair of general managers looking to engage in some talks and get in the news before we enter a possible work stoppage after the current collective bargaining agreement expires on September 15.
