(PhatzRadio / USA Today) — The Boston Bruins were without key scorer Milan Lucic when they took on the division rival Montreal Canadiens Monday night.

NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan suspended the rugged winger one game for a hit from behind.

He also suspended Calgary Flames winger Rene Bourque two games for another hit from behind.

Lucic’s incident occurred in Saturday’s game when he drove Philadelphia Flyers tough guy Zac Rinaldo into the boards after Rinaldo’s check against Nathan Horton. Lucic received a major and game misconduct.

Rinaldo got up immediately and Shanahan pointed out in his explanatory video that the hit, while illegal, wasn’t particularly egregious.

However, he added, “The overriding factor in elevating this check from behind from a penalty on the ice to a suspension is (Lucic’s) history of similar infractions, warnings and a fine.”

Lucic had been suspended for one game during the 2009 playoffs for a cross-check to the head of then-Canadiens forward Maxim Lapierre. He also was fined last year for a sucker punch.

In November, Shanahan talked to Lucic about his check that gave Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller a concussion, though he took no action for that hit.

The suspension will cost Lucic $22,072.07 in lost pay.

Lucic, who plays on the Bruins’ top line, has 11 goals and 24 points in 31 games and scored a goal Saturday.

Daniel Paille took Lucic’s place on the line with Horton and David Krejci.

Bourque hit Brent Seabrook into the boards Sunday after the Chicago Blackhawks defenseman lost the puck in a referee’s skates.

Shanahan said that put Seabrook in a vulnerable position.

“Not only does Bourque pursue for several feet, he fails to minimize this dangerous play to an acceptable degree,” Shanahan said.

The suspension comes at a bad time for the Flames because Matt Stajan injured his ankle in the same game and was put on the injured list on Monday. They recalled Paul Byron.

Bourque will lose $36,036.04 in pay and be eligible to return on Friday.

Milan Lucic's Past History Costs Bruins Winger One Game Ban for Borderline Offense

BOSTON -- Officially, Milan Lucic was suspended one game on Monday for his hit from behind on Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo Saturday in Philadelphia.
