Pro Sports Daily:
Whenever Boyd Gordon sets up for a faceoff — he has already taken 493 draws for the Edmonton Oilers — Will Acton plays the keen observer.
He watches the veteran centre drop low to the ice, his legs splayed far apart, the execution as consistent as can be.
Gordon is not only the Oilers’ best faceoff man, he is fourth in the NHL with a win percentage of 58.6. Of the 289 draws he’s won, a league-high 52 have been while killing penalties.
“I watch him every game,” said Acton, the Oilers’ rookie fourth-line centre who has won 50.8 per cent of his draws.
“I watch how he approaches the situation and the way he tries to execute. What I envy most about him is just how strong he is in there.
“He comes down, covers the good ice, and it’s as if no one can move his blade. He just pulls it back a foot or two and that’s all he needs. And he’s going in there without a visor on, yet his face is about a foot from the ice.
“He’s willing to pay the price to get it done.”
Gordon is indeed wear
BEST OF MAXIM
Some guys will never look in the mirror, afraid of what they’ll see, but when Ryan Smyth looked at himself last season it was hard not to see a shell of the player he once was, with just two goals in 47 Edmonton Oilers’ games, and only 13 points.
It was not a pretty sight, although as the loud and proud warrior in him steadfastly says “I didn’t think I was done.”
It seems as though that the leagues second worst team, the Edmonton Oilers (7-15-2), are smack dab in the middle of turning their season into something more respectable for themselves and their fans but before we get ahead of ourselves lets take a look at what the have to do the rest of the season.
The NHL‘s Oilers are now 24 games into their season. A season that has been difficult...
Ilya Bryzgalov, the most popular NHL astronomer and Edmonton Oilers goaltender, will make his first start of the 2013-14 NHL season on Thursday when the Oilers face off against the Nashville Predators.
Bryzgalov, 33, stopped 12 of 13 shots after coming in for struggling starter Devan Dubnyk in the Oilers 5-1 loss to the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.
Ilya Bryzgalov’s Oilers debut was inauspicious, but he’ll quickly have the chance to put it behind him.
Bryzgalov, who came on in relief Monday night in an eventual 5-1 loss to Chicago, will get his first start on Thursday when the Oilers take on the Preds in Nashville.
“It wasn’t the best way for us to throw [Bryzgalov] into the fire,” Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins...
For Sam Gagner, it was only a matter of time.
The Edmonton Oilers centre wasn’t going to go to the whole year without scoring a goal. Now that he has it, Gagner can loosen up that vice grip on his stick.
“I felt like after that goal, I got a lot more chances and I was around the net a little more,” Gagner said following practice Saturday. “It gives you confidence, but I...
If Mitchell Moroz is any indication as to what it is going to be like to play against the Edmonton Oilers in the near future then it will undoubtedly become more difficult and uncomfortable for the opposition.
The 6′ 3″ 214lbs 19 year old Calgary, Alberta native is a left winger that was the Oilers 2nd pick (32 Overall) in the 2012 entry draft and is one of the toughest customers...
The facial stubble is still intact, only because Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins has let a few superstitious tendancies creep into his day to day routine.
The Oilers, who have fashioned their first three game win streak of the season, host the Chicago Blackhawks tonight at Rexall Place – with the same lineup in tact of course.
That means goaltender Devan Dubnyk — who...
Count the Blackhawks among those unimpressed that Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk had been named the NHL's Third Star for last week.
The defending Stanley Cup champions made it a rough start to the new week for Dubnyk as the Hawks chased him during a 5-1 victory Monday night at Rexall Place.
Andrew Shaw led the offensive onslaught with two goals and an assist while Jonathan...
