With the NHL’s top two leaders in career overtime goals, the Devils should be virtually unbeatable in games that aren’t decided in regulation time. While their 7-11 record this season proves that isn’t the case, they claimed two vital points Thursday night when Patrik Elias scored a four-on-three power play goal 40 seconds into overtime to lift the Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center. “It’s hugely important,” said goalie Cory Schneider, who stopped 14 of the 16 shots he faced to get his record back to .500 at 10-10-7. “I don’t think we would’ve been satisfied coming out of here with one point.” For Elias it was the 16th overtime goal of his career, which ranks second all-time behind only Jaromir Jagr. When it was suggested that Jagr is within reach because he’ll hit the advanced age of 42 in just over two weeks, Elias said: “Yeah, but he’s going to play until he’s 48. I’m not.” Schneider and the Devils were fighting to protect a 2-1 lead late in the third period when Jagr was called for hooking Stars captain Jamie Benn. However, Benn was called for diving, nullifying a potential Dallas power play. Yet the Stars pulled goalie Kari Lehtonen for an extra skater and tied it with 51.5 seconds on the clock. Tyler Seguin roofed a shot from the left circle during a flurry in front as the Stars worked a 5-on-4 advantage. “We were obviously a little disappointed there to let them tie it up,” Schneider said, adding that he doesn’t know if he is starting Friday night’s game in Nashville. “We played a pretty good game. It seemed a lot busier than 16 shots. They seemed like they had some rush chances and some good opportunities that we either made a good defensive play on or we got a block or they just didn’t connect at the last second. “We hung with it there and our power play has been going pretty good. It’s been getting some big goals for us. I think we had a lot of faith we could get the job done in overtime.” They went 2-for-3 on the power play, including the winner. Elias was tripped by Benn 28 seconds into overtime and the Devils won it when Jagr’s shot was tipped by Travis Zajac. The rebound came to Elias at the bottom of the left circle for his 10th goal of the season.
