Paul Ranger did his best to liven up a preseason shootout between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres. Taking a shot in the 10th round of a meaningless shootout, Ranger called on his foot to deliver one of the most memorable shootout attempts in NHL history.  If only that would have gone in. You can tell by the huge grin on Ranger's face prior to his attempt that he knows he's about to do something ridiculous. Buffalo netminder Jhonas Enroth didn't seem very fond of Ranger's move, delivering a nice slash to the defenseman after his shot. However, after the game Enroth commented that it wasn't that big of a deal and admitted it was pretty creative. [follow]

Leafs defenseman Paul Ranger breaks out kick-stick shot (Video)

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Paul Ranger Saturday night's preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres to have a little fun by breaking out a kick-stick trick shot during the overtime shootout. Despite the fact that Ranger didn't come close to scoring with the shot, the fans loved his creativity. Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth, however, didn't seem to care for it, as...

Goalie fight highlights Sabres-Leafs preseason line brawl (Video)

In case you needed a reminder that the NHL season is right around the corner, check out the massive line brawl that broke out in the third period of Sunday night's preseason game between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. The highlight of the brawl was the goalie fight between Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier and Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, which Bernier seemed to...

Video: Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs have huge brawl in preseason game

This is absolutely crazy. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres got into a massive brawl in a preseason game on Sunday night that even included a goalie fight. And if you’re anything like me, you love a good goalie fight. The brawl began when Sabres heavyweight John Scott initiated a fight with Toronto’s Phil Kessel with 10:01 left in the third period. That came after a...

Sabres demote 6 to AHL Rochester

Defensemen Brayden McNabb and Chad Ruhwedel were among six Buffalo Sabres assigned to the minors. Also demoted to AHL Rochester on Monday were forwards Mike Zigomanis and Matt Ellis, defenseman Drew Bagnall and goalie Matt Hackett. Bagnall and Ellis must first clear waivers. The moves came a little over a week before Buffalo opens the season at Detroit Oct. 2. McNabb and Ruhwedel...

Leafs rally for 3-2 SO win over Sabres

The Toronto Maple Leafs rallied for two goals in the third-period and then went 15 rounds in the shootout to earn a 3-2 win and hand the Buffalo Sabres their first loss of the preseason Saturday night. Jay McClement scored for the Leafs in the shootout, while James Reimer stopped all 15 Buffalo shooters. Reimer made 39 saves in regulation. Jamie Devane scored for Toronto at 9:53...

Morgan Rielly Is NHL-Ready

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star, With 10 days to the beginning of the 2013-14 NHL season, there’s still time left to evaluate whether Rielly, at 19, is ready for the NHL. But why wait? It’s pretty clear already he deserves to be on the team. For those familiar with this space, of course, this might come as a surprise, and there’s no question that this space...

You Deserve This Phil Kessel Lightsaber .GIF

In case you missed it last night, things got really testy during the Sabres-Maple Leafs pre-season game. Thus, the Internet has decided to have some fun with it, because that is what Al Gore intended on when he created the damn thing. [Lighthouse Hockey] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

NHL Preseason Excitement

Generally all forms of preseason action are pretty boring, unless you’re watching Hard Knocks of course. Apparently the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t get this memo, as Sunday night’s preseason affair was played with the intensity of a rivalry playoff game. Already in the third period, things escalated quickly as Buffalo’s fighter, John Scott (6’8, 270 pounds...

Leafs-Sabres brawl through exhibition

Buffalo Sabres tough guy John Scott was looking for a fight. The Toronto Maple Leafs weren't happy when he picked Phil Kessel as his opponent. Kessel, who had scored twice in the Leafs' 5-3 preseason win Sunday night, is 6-foot even, and Scott is 6-8. The two aren't even close to being in the same weight class and Kessel wasn't inclined to get involved. Kessel backtracked...

Johnston: Leafs-Sabres shenanigans, Clarkson’s indiscretions will ding Leafs roster’s bottom line

The proprietor and I were sort of hoping for a nice, quiet Sunday night on KK, and that seemed to be the case until about 9:30, when the Maple Leafs and Bruins engaged in massive amounts of dumb and/or exciting fighting. posted what may be the longest and most context-setting clip of the bouts (and you will all be shocked, of course, to find out that John Scott was...

David Clarkson Likely Facing 10-Game Suspension for Leaving Bench During Maple Leafs-Sabres Brawl (Video)

David Clarkson will probably have to wait awhile before making his regular-season debut in blue and white. Overshadowed by the goalie fighting and stick swinging during Sunday night’s Maple Leafs-Sabres line brawl was the fact that Clarkson, who signed with the Leafs in July after seven seasons in New Jersey, left the bench during the melee, subjecting him to an automatic 10-game...

You Knew It Was Coming - The Stanley Cup For A Canadian Team

from Stephen Whyno of the CP at the Globe and Mail, A Stanley Cup in Winnipeg, or Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa would be a benchmark for the league, as well. The longest drought before this one was seven years, between the Montreal Maroons’ victory in 1935 and the Maple Leafs’ in 1942. The next Canadian team to win the 16 playoff games necessary...

Afternoon Line

As Sunday night’s brawl between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres proved again, stupidity is frequently a hallmark of the NHL exhibition season, when the goons and the wannabes are all trying to catch an organization’s attention. Every year, the NHL playoffs provide the most entertaining and sensibly played hockey of the season. It’s far superior to the regular...
