Penguins acquire/sign goaltender Tomas Vokoun
Those following the Pens potentially loaded offseason didn’t need to wait until the NHL draft hits Pittsburgh at end of the month for substantial news to come out of the 412 area code.
This morning, in return for a seventh round pick, the Penguins acquired veteran netminder Tomas Vokoun from the Washington Capitals for a seventh round draft selection in this year’s draft.
Subsequently, Vokoun was swiftly signed to a two year contract extension with Pittsburgh that will be worth four million dollars over two years.
The move, while not anything resembling of a surprise, can easily be argued as a rock solid move by Pittsburgh’s front office and general manager Ray Shero.
It’s no surprise that Pittsburgh’s goaltending situation in 2011-12 was an albatross the team was never truly quite bested. In fact, it was an integral part of their undoing.
