NHL Game to Watch For: Blackhawks @ Red Wings at Noon on NBC,

Thoughts on Both Teams

Avalanche: The Colorado Avalanche enter this game off a 5-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Pepsi Center. That loss put the Avalanche out of the playoff race. Colorado's record in their last ten games is 4-4-2.

The Avalanche don't have anything to play for after the loss, Thursday night. The only thing the Avs have to play for now is to give the fans their final win of the season. Also, to just play spoiler.

Gabriel Landeskog is the most dynamic rookie in the NHL, right now. Landeskog is not only a scorer, but can use his body well going after the pucks. That type of player has the most value in the NHL. If I could vote for the NHL Awards, I would vote Landeskog for Rookie of the Year. Watch for him, Saturday night.

Jean-Sebastian Giguere will be getting the start against the Nashville Predators. Also, according to Adrian Dater, Milan Hejduk might be playing his final game in a Colorado Avalanche uniform Saturday night. Dater was hearing whispers that the team is planning on releasing Hejduk after the season.

Predators: The Nashville Predators enter this game off a 2-0 shutout win over the Dallas Stars Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena, in their regular season home finale. The Predators' record in their last ten games is 6-4-0.

With the win over the Stars Thursday night, the Nashville Predators were assured that they woould be playing in another 4 vs 5 First Round Match-Up, but weren't assured on who they would play and if they would have home-ice advantage.

Saturday at Noon CT on NBC, the Chicago Blackhawks go to Detroit to take on the Red Wings. That game is very important to the Predators as it may determine their playoff match-up. Here are the several playoff scenarios for Nashville. I hope I covered every scenario possible...

  • If Detroit Wins: Nashville will have to treat the game against the Avalanche just as any other, win. To secure home-ice, Nashville will have to win or go to overtime or a shootout. Detroit vs Nashville First Round series.
  • If Chicago Wins in Regulation: Nashville would clinch home-ice advantage and would play the Blackhawks in the First Round.
  • If Detroit Loses in OT/SO: Nashville would clinch home-ice advantage and would play the Red Wings in the First Round.
  • If Detroit Wins & Nashville Loses: Detroit would clinch home-ice advantage against the Predators in the First Round
  • If Detroit & Nashville Lose in Regulation: Nashville would clinch home-ice and play the Blackhawks in the First Round.

Here are some Quick Hits from the Nashville Predators.

• The Predators have posted a 12-6-1 vs. the Northwest Division this season.
• Nashville has posted a 29-12-4 record in its last 45 games, outscoring the opposition 135-105 (plus 30), despite being outshot 1,355-1,260 (minus 95).
• Nashville leads the Western Conference and has the League’s second-best winning percentage in games decided by one or two goals (.701).
• The Preds are 34-3-4 when scoring first – the League’s second-best winning percentage in that situation (.829).
• The Predators have scored 231 goals for the season – that is the third-highest total in club history – 272 (06-07), 259 (05-06).
• Nashville’s special teams are plus-16 on the season after finishing plus-three in 2010-11. Nashville (105.2) ranks among the League’s top five teams in combined special teams play (PP%+PK%).
• Nashville is 14-0-2 this season when Pekka Rinne makes 35 saves or more this season.
• Nashville is 33-15-3 with Roman Josi in the line-up vs. 14-11-5 when he has not dressed.
• With the Predators’ victory over Dallas, Head Coach Barry Trotz – the only man to hold the position in franchise history – notched his 502nd career win, moving him past Pat Burns for 15th on the all-time wins list.
• The Predators sold out a franchise-record 25 home games this season. They finished the season with an eight-game sellout streak, which ties the franchise record set earlier this season.
