NHL Game to Watch For: Blackhawks @ Red Wings at Noon on NBC,

Thoughts on Both Teams

Avalanche: The Colorado Avalanche enter this game off a 5-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Pepsi Center. That loss put the Avalanche out of the playoff race. Colorado's record in their last ten games is 4-4-2.

The Avalanche don't have anything to play for after the loss, Thursday night. The only thing the Avs have to play for now is to give the fans their final win of the season. Also, to just play spoiler.

Gabriel Landeskog is the most dynamic rookie in the NHL, right now. Landeskog is not only a scorer, but can use his body well going after the pucks. That type of player has the most value in the NHL. If I could vote for the NHL Awards, I would vote Landeskog for Rookie of the Year. Watch for him, Saturday night.

Jean-Sebastian Giguere will be getting the start against the Nashville Predators. Also, according to Adrian Dater, Milan Hejduk might be playing his final game in a Colorado Avalanche uniform Saturday night. Dater was hearing whispers that the team is planning on releasing Hejduk after the season.

Predators: The Nashville Predators enter this game off a 2-0 shutout win over the Dallas Stars Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena, in their regular season home finale. The Predators' record in their last ten games is 6-4-0.

With the win over the Stars Thursday night, the Nashville Predators were assured that they woould be playing in another 4 vs 5 First Round Match-Up, but weren't assured on who they would play and if they would have home-ice advantage.

Saturday at Noon CT on NBC, the Chicago Blackhawks go to Detroit to take on the Red Wings. That game is very important to the Predators as it may determine their playoff match-up. Here are the several playoff scenarios for Nashville. I hope I covered every scenario possible...

  • If Detroit Wins: Nashville will have to treat the game against the Avalanche just as any other, win. To secure home-ice, Nashville will have to win or go to overtime or a shootout. Detroit vs Nashville First Round series.
  • If Chicago Wins in Regulation: Nashville would clinch home-ice advantage and would play the Blackhawks in the First Round.
  • If Detroit Loses in OT/SO: Nashville would clinch home-ice advantage and would play the Red Wings in the First Round.
  • If Detroit Wins & Nashville Loses: Detroit would clinch home-ice advantage against the Predators in the First Round
  • If Detroit & Nashville Lose in Regulation: Nashville would clinch home-ice and play the Blackhawks in the First Round.

Here are some Quick Hits from the Nashville Predators.

• The Predators have posted a 12-6-1 vs. the Northwest Division this season.
• Nashville has posted a 29-12-4 record in its last 45 games, outscoring the opposition 135-105 (plus 30), despite being outshot 1,355-1,260 (minus 95).
• Nashville leads the Western Conference and has the League’s second-best winning percentage in games decided by one or two goals (.701).
• The Preds are 34-3-4 when scoring first – the League’s second-best winning percentage in that situation (.829).
• The Predators have scored 231 goals for the season – that is the third-highest total in club history – 272 (06-07), 259 (05-06).
• Nashville’s special teams are plus-16 on the season after finishing plus-three in 2010-11. Nashville (105.2) ranks among the League’s top five teams in combined special teams play (PP%+PK%).
• Nashville is 14-0-2 this season when Pekka Rinne makes 35 saves or more this season.
• Nashville is 33-15-3 with Roman Josi in the line-up vs. 14-11-5 when he has not dressed.
• With the Predators’ victory over Dallas, Head Coach Barry Trotz – the only man to hold the position in franchise history – notched his 502nd career win, moving him past Pat Burns for 15th on the all-time wins list.
• The Predators sold out a franchise-record 25 home games this season. They finished the season with an eight-game sellout streak, which ties the franchise record set earlier this season.

Gaustad continues to dominate the face off circle for Predators in 2-0 win over Dallas

The Nashville Predators and Dallas stars hooked up in a classic battle between two teams fighting in the trenches for playoff positions on Thursday night at the Bridgestone Arena. The game was a scoreless standoff until Frankie Bouillon broke through with a goal on a rebound with 15:32 remaining in the contest. The only other score in the game was on a goal from Patric Hornqvist with...

Predators goalie Lindback leaves with injury

Nashville Predators goalie Anders Lindback left Saturday night's game against the Colorado Avalanche late in the third period because of an undisclosed injury. Lindback was hurt with 2:14 left in the third. The Nashville backup landed on the back of his head after Colorado left winger Cody McLeod collided with him in the crease. Lindback had 34 saves when he left the game....

Predators blank Stars 2-0, now control their own destiny in pursuit of home ice advantage

Pekka Rinne and the Nashville Predators shut out the Dallas Stars 2-0 on Thursday night. With the win, the Predators move into fourth spot in the Western Conference standings, one point ahead of the Detroit Red Wings.  Nashville now controls its own destiny in the fight for home ice advantage in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with one game remaining on the schedule...

Nashville’s depth players come up big in 6-1 win over Colorado Avalanche

The Nashville Predators went into Saturday night’s contest knowing they had already secured fourth spot in the Western Conference standings and home ice in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. While the game had no meaning in terms of the standings, the Predators came out strong offensively and beat the Colorado Avalanche by a 6-1 score, despite allowing 45 shots on goal...

Predators eliminate Stars with shutout victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Nashville coach Barry Trotz insists he knew nothing of Detroit's loss just as his Predators went into the third period needing a win of their own to grab back the chance of landing home-ice advantage to start the playoffs. His Predators sure responded as if they did. Pekka Rinne made 28 saves for his fifth shutout of the season, Francis Bouillon scored...

Preds get goals from six different players, beat Avs…

It was the most meaningless Nashville Predators game since April 4, 2008. The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Detroit Red Wings this afternoon, locking Detroit in 5th place in the Western Conference and giving the Preds home ice advantage in the first round. Therefore, tonight’s tilt against the Colorado Avalanche meant absolutely nothing. The good news? Nashville didn’t act like...

Avalanche Warning - Swan Song for the 2011-2012 Season

The night is darkest just before the dawn.  And I promise you, the dawn is coming. Last night was a tough one for Colorado Avalanche Nation.  In a certain must-win game, the Avalanche could not get it done as they fell 5-2 to the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets. Of course, had the Avs pulled off the victory, it would have all been for naught as the San Jose Sharks won a wild won...

Predators 6, Avalanche 1

Backup Anders Lindback stopped 34 shots before leaving early in the final period after a collision and Patric Hornqvist scored his team-leading 27th goal to lift the playoff-bound Nashville Predators to a 6-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night in the regular-season finale for both teams. David Legwand, Craig Smith, Roman Josi, Brandon Yip and Matt Halischuk also had...

Paul McCann: Game Night in Smashville - Last One of the Regular Season

It is game night in Smashville for the final time in the regular season. The dallas Stars are in town for a desperation matchup with the Nashville Predators. For Nashville, the game is important to keep alive the team’s hopes for home ice advantage in the first round. For Dallas, well, their entire season is on the line, a loss destroys what little hope they have for the playoffs...

Aaron Musick: Avs fall on their face, end their season

After five days off, the Colorado Avalanche get to prepare for six months without a meaningful game. Playing the 27- now 28- win Columbus Blue Jackets, the Avs played a sloppy, turnover-filled hockey game in a 5-2 loss. Cam Atkinson scored his first career hat trick and Rick Nash, probably playing his second-to-last game in a Jackets' uniform, scored twice. Steve Mason...

Predators-Avalanche Preview

The Nashville Predators are on the verge of clinching home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs, and they may get it without doing anything by the time they take the ice Saturday night. If there's work left to do, though, they shouldn't be too concerned. The Predators will need - at most - one point to clinch the Western Conference's fourth seed in their...

Game 81 Preview: Dallas Stars @ Nashville Predators

There's one foot over the cliff and the second is already making a step, but this team is yet alive (even of just barely). It's going to...

Nashville back in the driver seat, Rinne gets his 5th shutout beating Dallas 2-0

Photo Credit: John Russell/NHLI via Getty Images Nothing was settled coming into Thursday night’s game against the Dallas Stars, but one thing was for sure: If Nashville wanted to attempt to grab the 4th seed in the Western Conference and home ice advantage, they HAD to win against the Stars. On top of Pekka Rinne’s 28 save shutout, Nashville officially eliminated the Dallas...

Nashville finishes the season on a mile-high note, blast Colorado 6-1

Photo Credit: AP Photo/David Zalubowski With the regular season winding down and Nashville visiting Colorado for game 82, most were unsure what to expect with the line-up changes being handed down after the Predators secured the 4th seed in the Western Conference when Detroit lost in a shootout to Chicago. However, with Nashville’s top line taking a rest for the night, it wouldn’t...
