The Capitals defeated the Rangers today by a score of 1-0 in overtime to take a 2-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. For a box score, click here.
Gonna point out a few things before getting to the OT goal....
The start to the game was much, much better. The Rangers were able to sustain pressure in the offensive zone and nearly scored when Stralman rang one off the crossbar.
For whatever reason, perhaps the early start had something to do with it, the Rangers could never sustain pressure in the Caps' offensive zone. Only 24 shots on goal in 68 minutes. Washington dominated play for large swath's of today's game.
Derrick Brassard was money in the circle. Brad Richards.... not so much, 4-14 including 1-5 in the defensive zone.
The Rangers gave up quite a few more odd-man rushes than normal. Luckily for the Rangers, Lundqvist was more than on his game today.
There truly are no adjectives worthy enough to describe Henrik's ...

In Rick Nash's first playoff game as a Rangers and just the fifth of his career he fired 16 shots with eight of them making their way on goal, but, unfortunately for the player the Blueshirts signed to provide the offense they were lacking in last year's postseason, none of them found the back of the net. Nash has just one playoff goal in his career.
Here's Nash on...
John Tortorella takes a lot of heat from the press for his demeanor during post game press conferences, but last night he should have gotten a medal for biting his lip (00:25 mark)...

Yes, I’m aware out-puck-possessioning isn’t a word.
The Rangers out-shot the Caps last night by a margin of 36-30. The Rangers out-hit the Caps by a 41-32 margin. The Rangers out-Corsi’d (out-possessed) the Caps by a +16 margin. But yet, the Rangers lost. All of these stats would make you think that the Rangers outplayed the Caps. But, leading...

We've posted some pretty classic tattoos over the years here on Outside the Boxscore but this one takes the cake as the best NHL one.

The Washington Capitals now have a commanding 2-0 series lead over the New York Rangers, thanks to Mike Green's overtime power-play blast the only goal that was able to solve either goalie in this Saturday afternoon matchup. The bounce-back season from Alex Ovechkin has been well documented. I mean,Ovechkin has been on a goal per game pace for his past 24 contests. For me however...
Late in regulation during the Caps/Rangers game, Karl Alzner put a puck over the glass. Many thought it should have been a penalty but...
#NYR According to NHL, puck DEFLECTED off Alzner's stick. Because it wasn't shot or batted, as is the wording in rule 63.2, no delay of game

After Saturday's 1-0 overtime victory, Caps Outsider's camera caught defenseman Karl Alzner in a very celebratory pose.

Although their series is far from over, the playoff fortunes of the New York Rangers may have turned for the worse because of how the rule for delay of game infractions was worded and interpreted.
With less than a minute left in regulation, Washingtonâs Karl Alzner swiped at a puck that was shot into his own zone, which went over the glass into the crowd. The Rangers expected...
