With the 2012 NHL Trade Deadline just around the corner, the frequency of rumors that claim the New York Rangers have interest in Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash has increased on a daily basis. Today, though , is the first time we are seeing a legitimate rumor as Larry Brooks of the New York Post is confirming that the Rangers have called Columbus and inquired about Nash. That, by no means, insinuates that he will be calling Madison Square Garden home any time soon.

From Brooks....

The Rangers have had preliminary discussions with the Blue Jackets regarding the availability of Rick Nash, The Post has learned, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the 27-year-old power winger is en route to Broadway.

An individual familiar with the situation told The Post that the chance of completing a trade before the Feb. 27 deadline is a long shot.

Nash is currently signed to a contract that pays him an average of $7.8 million per season until 2018. Also listed on that contract is a no-movement clause, so if a trade were to go down at some point, his personal feelings would be the ultimate deciding factor in the end.

Brooks also goes on to say that the asking price for Nash, at the moment, is believed to be Brandon Dubinsky, prospect Chris Kreider and a first round draft pick. Nash is good, but he is nowhere worth that package.

Chris Kreider, in my mind, is untouchable right now. The kid is en route to stardom and he has yet to play a single game in the National Hockey League. I can't foresee GM Glen Sather trading him away for a 27-year-old who does not guarantee success until he actually starts producing for the Rangers. Remember, he's never played in a big market before.

I don't think this trade is going to happen - I really don't. But we have confirmation that the Rangers have interest so it's my job to report.

Nash has 18 goals and 39 points in 56 games played with the Jackets this season.
