the Red Wings’ summer development camp raised a significant chunk of change for Bryan Rufenach’s summer hockey camp while remembering the fallen Wings prospect last Tuesday in Traverse City, and while the Rufenach family was understandably shaken while making a brief appearance at the activities taking pace at Centre Ice Arena, the Grand Traverse Insider’s Greg Gielczyk spoke to Wings camp director Ann Reeves about the event’s significance for both the family and the community: “There was a commemorative display of Bryan’s hockey pictures presented to the family,” Reeves said. “His picture was in the middle and then various action photos surrounded it. Framed in glass, it was quite a large collage of pictures.” Reeves was amazed at the fan turnout. “I was absolutely overwhelmed by the number in attendance,” Reeves commented. “We had beer and wine. We had a dunk tank. It was hilarious. One of the prospects, his name is Mitch Callahan, actually got in the dunk tank and a bunch of the

Red Wings evening news: Quincey deal ‘close’ per Pleiness and Khan; still waiting on Doan, etc.

Excellent news from the Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness this evening: the Wings will avoid a nasty arbitration hearing with restricted free agent Kyle Quincey, and are likely to ink him to a contract extension soon: “I know we’re close,” said Wings general manager Ken Holland, of the on-going negotiations with Kyle Quincey in a phone interview Tuesday. “We’re hoping to...

Will Dominik Hasek excel if he returns to the NHL?

Reports are indicating that Dominik Hasek is contemplating a return to the NHL. Hasek, 47, hasn't appeared in the NHL since he called it quits following the 2007-08 season where he minded the net for the Detroit Red Wings. We aren't pulling your leg. Even at the ripe age of 47, Hasek is apparently extremely motivated to play again in the NHL. Hasek admits that he isn'...

Red Wings overnight report: reverse-engineering Petr Mrazek

Drafting and developing athletic goaltenders requires a bit of reverse engineering. Goalies who naturally play an instinctive game and employ acrobatic saves when fundamentals fail them tend to make stops on shots that leave more conventionally-trained goaltenders flummoxed…But as these goaltenders move up the professional ranks, the ones who decline to rein in their tendencies...

Red Wings afternoon news: Homer and TC volunteers on parade, Delvecchio’s short skate and Pulkkatalk

The Red Wings’ website has posted a clip of Tomas Holmstrom taking part in the “Cherry Royale Parade” commemorating the conclusion of Traverse City’s Cherry Festival, and I would be remiss if I didn’t note that Ann Reeves, Pete Correia and all the fantastic volunteers from Centre Ice Arena walked in the parade behind the Holmstrom family. Holmstrom earned his feting...

Detroit Has The Best Team Corsi

A couple days ago I posted the team Corsi ratings for 2011/12.  This is the difference in shots attempted (shots on goal, missed shots and blocked shots) taken by a team minus those taken against a team in five on five situations.  It is a strong indicator of a team’s puck possession ability.  This is an important repeatable part of a team’s success or failure.  It clearly...

Red Wings evening news: Khan provides Doan/Quincey/Holmstrom updates; combacks are all the rage

With CBA uncertainty and talk of 40-something players making comebacks filling the “slow days” of mid-July, MLive’s Ansar Khan provides an update on different can of “strange” in the Red Wings’ slow-but-steady pursuit of one Shane Doan, should the 35-year-old decide to leave the Phoenix Coyotes… “I’ve had conversations with Shane Doan’s representatives,’...
