Detroit Red Wings
St. Louis Blues
After a shaky first period, the Red Wings all but destroy the Vancouver Canucks in an 8 - 3 victory, leading into two days off.
Jimmy Howard got his confidence boosted early with a spectacular save on Maxim Lapierre’s early breakaway. Vancouver then opened the scoring at 5:45 on a wrist shot from Daniel Sedin. The Red Wings shortly after went on the power play from a hooking call to Ryan Kesler, and then had 13 seconds of 5-on-3 for a delay of game call against Chris Tanev. Neither power play was converted on by the Wings.
Red Wings then peppered Roberto Luongo for two consecutive goals, the first unassisted by Jordin Tootoo at 11:08, a wrister that deflected off a Canucks defenseman for his 2nd of the season. About a minute and a half later, Niklas Kronwall put in his 3rd of the season off a slapshot at 12:37. Assists went to Pavel Datsyuk and Daniel Cleary on a 6-on-5 delayed penalty call against the Canucks. Vancouve...
BEST OF MAXIM
Brian Lashoff has done everything Mike Babcock and the Detroit Red Wings have asked of him since he was pressed into duty in an injury-depleted defensive corps. Monday, the Wings rewarded the 22-year-old blue liner.
Wings sign Defenseman Brian Lashoff to a 3-year extension.

DETROIT You see it so often when the playoffs roll around but it's nearly as true in this shortened NHL season the goaltender is the most important player.
For the injury-depleted Detroit Red Wings, that is more true than ever.
True, Wings goalie Jimmy Howard can't help the team's struggling power play, but if he prevents the other team from scoring, the Wings will...
DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Brian Lashoff to a three-year, 2.175 million contract. The team announced the move Monday. Lashoff has a goal and two assists in 15 games this season, his first in the NHL. The 22-year-old native of Albany, N.Y., has made the most of his opportunities to fill in for banged-up defenseman in Detroit. The undrafted...
DETROIT Everyone around the NHL knows about Detroit stars Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.
Soon everyone around the NHL will also know the name Damien Brunner.
From the second Brunner arrived on North American ice, he's managed to do what he did when he dominated the Swiss National League A score.
On Sunday, the first-year center was at his best, scoring two goals and...
I'm going to start an entry I wouldn't normally write with a set of announcements I normally wouldn't state:
1. I may or may not split up recaps and overnight reports from now on, depending on your feedback. I've done so for the Wings-Predators and now the Wings-Canucks games simply because there's so much going on during the weekends in terms of notes, quotes...
On Saturday afternoon, Red Wings fans were nervous...Or at least I was. The Wings were heading into a Saturday night tilt against Nashville in a must-must-win situation, having gone 0-3-and-2 over their past five games.
Saturday night, the Wings smoked Nashville 4-0, and we all felt a little better.
After the first period of today's game against Vancouver, Wings fans were...
Games like this, they just make me so happy. Early on it looked like it might be a long night with the Sedin twins playing nauseatingly great hockey, but Detroit took over in the second with, get this: our special teams. Not only did they score three with the man advantage, they didn’t give up any to a hot Vancouver power play. Awesome.
More after the jump:
Good win tonight. These recaps are a heck of a lot more fun to write than the losses. Though Nashville controlled the play for what seemed like the majority of the game, Howard was the difference, much like the last win against the Kings. I didn’t see any one player play poorly tonight, but I saw plenty of guys give their all.

Late afternoon game today. VAN lead their Division (as usual), and had the day off yesterday. Luongo has been a freaking wall.
For DET, yesterday's game could not have gone better. The Wings took a 2-0 and didn't blow it, Jimmy pitched a shutout, DET tallied a PP marker, and nobody got hurt. Slump-buster or abberation?

The Detroit Red Wings will face off against the Vancouver Canucks this afternoon (5 PM, FSD/Sportsnet West/97.1 FM) minus their designated starter for the day. As Paul noted, the Wings recalled Tom McCollum and will start Jimmy Howard instead of Jonas Gustavsson due to a "sore groin," though Wings GM Ken Holland told the Macomb Daily's Chuck Pleiness that the team&...

Vancouver is in Detroit today and looking end their road trip on a high by picking-up 7-of-8 points on it. Vancouver comes into this one after a Luongo out-dueled Rinne for the 1-0 win. Detroit also comes into this one after shutting out the Preds 4-0 last night.
The Detroit Red Wings' 4-0 victory over the Nashville Predators may or may not have been a command performance, but the Red Wings were able to rely on Jimmy Howard's superb netminding while finding their "legs," and while Drew Miller's 1-0 goal gave the Wings some tentative poise, Tomas Tatar's 2-0 goal 2:58 into the 2nd period seemed to put the Wings on...
The Wings are 0-3-2 in their last five games. During that stretch they’ve scored just one power play goal and have blown two-goal leads three times. DET's special teams may take the prize for oxymoron of the year; the PP is beyond pathetic at 12.8% (28). The PK is just as bad, or worse, at 75.7% (25). Assuming, on average, DET are assessed 4 minors a game (I don't...
At the beginning of February, I looked at this weekend and figured that today's game between the Red Wings and Vancouver Canucks (5 PM EST, FSD/Sportsnet Pacific/97.1 FM) as something of a "bonus win." Today's game marks the Wings' 3rd in 4 nights, their 4th in 6 nights, their 5th over the last 8 nights and their 7th over approximately a week-and-a-half'...
The Nashville Predators were shutout once again for the second straight night as they fall 4-0 to the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.
Unable to convert on the many chances they had, the Predators couldn’t put a shot past Jimmy Howard, who recorded his first shutout of the season by stopping all 33 shots that came his way.
Not only did Nashville lose the game, but...
