Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist hasn't been playing in the AHL for almost a month now, but he was still named to the AHL's First All-Star Team. From the Griffins' PR department, here comes the tip of an iceberg worth of Red Wings pre-game stories: NYQUIST NAMED TO AHL FIRST ALL-STAR TEAM GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Griffins right wing Gustav Nyquist on Thursday was named to the 2012-13 American Hockey League First All-Star Team. Nyquist, 23, leads the Griffins with 60 points (23-37—60) in 58 games and ranks among the team’s leaders with 37 assists (1st), nine power play goals (1st), 25 power play points (1st), a plus-10 rating (7th), two game-winning goals (T5th), three shootout goals (2nd) and 169 shots (2nd). Despite missing 12 of Grand Rapids’ last 13 games while with the parent Detroit Red Wings, Nyquist still sits eighth in the AHL in scoring, as he was leading the league in scoring at the time of his recall. He also has 18 multipoint games, the...

Red Wings, goalie Jimmy Howard close to new deal

The Red Wings and goaltender Jimmy Howard are near an agreement that would keep him off the free-agent market this summer. ''It's really, really close,'' Howard said Thursday. Added Detroit general manager Ken Holland: ''We're close, but it's not a done deal.'' Howard is in the second season of a two-year, $4.5 million deal. Detroit...

Red Wings GM Ken Holland talks to WDFN’s Sean Baligian about playoff chances, trade deadline

Red Wings GM Ken Holland appeared on WDFN's Matt Sheppard show this morning, and Holland spoke at length to Sean Baligian about his team's playoff chances, their trade deadline philosophy about about essentially rebuilding on the fly. WDFN's Twitter account posted some highlights from the interview: Continue reading "Red Wings GM Ken Holland talks to WDFN’s...

Red Wings mid-day news: on training camp, the Griffins, the road ahead and a patient Jimmy Howard

Updated 2x at 11:50 AM: Amongst this morning's Red Wings-related news: If there's anyone who needed to hear that the Red Wings are officially committed to holding their summer prospect development camp, their prospect tournament and the big club's main camp in Traverse City, it was the venue that lost at least half of its operating income when the lockout canceled last...

Will the Detroit Red Wings make the playoffs?

Perhaps one of the greatest active streaks in professional sports may be on the line this month.  The Detroit Red Wings have appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs each year, for the past 21 years.  As the standings are currently, the Red Wings hold the 8th and final playoff position in the Western Conference.  With [...]

Red Wings-Sharks set-up and overnight report: on prolonging ‘the streak,’ Pulkkinen and Stuart

The Detroit Red Wings' coaches and management have spent the past two days engaging in what I'd argue is the worst course of action for the representatives of a team in the middle of a vicous battle for its playoff life: they made repeated public statements insisting that the team's personnel have performed up to expectations (much to the ire of annoyed Wings fans), and...

Red Wings Chick Celebrates Goal With Handjob Gesture

BC reader @deanonicolaides wanted you guys to see this Red Wings chick in Chicago tonight going handjob gesture after D…

Wings miss valuable point in SO loss to Sharks

DETROIT -- These are challenging days indeed for the Detroit Red Wings. This is a team so accustomed to making the playoffs that rookie defenseman Danny DeKeyser literally has no memory of them not doing so. The last time they missed postseason play was in the 1989-90 season. DeKeyser, a Detroit native, was born March 7, 1990. After Thursday night's 3-2 shootout loss to the...

GDT - Game 41: Red Wings (19-15-6) at ‘Hawks (30-5-4) 8:30

After last nights craptastic game in which the Wings managed a charity point, DET remain in 8th, 2 pts behind MIN, and 2 pts in front of PHX. If DET are lucky enough to limp into the post-season,then tonights tilt against CHI is the proverbial playoff preview.  Looking at the'Hawks gaudy statistics, it could be ugly, really friggin ugly. However, after witnessing last nights...

Red Wings Fall in 2nd Night in S/O, 3-2

Red Wings earn yet another point, but fall yet again in the shootout to the Blackhawks, 3-2. The Red Wings came into this game needing to pull out every point possible, and they came out playing like it. The first period was a big defensive battle from both ends, with an electrifying playoff [...]

TiqIQ Ticket Preview: Red Wings @ Blackhawks

By Matthew Feuerman of TiqIQ, The Red Wings and Blackhawks get together Friday night in Chicago and tickets are currently averaging $410, making this the most expensive Hawks-Wings tilt this season, according to TiqIQ. Normally, tickets to see the Blackhawks at the United Center average $265/seat, making this matchup is 55% more expensive than the team’s home average. Get...

Detroit Red Wings’ Early Overpayment of Jimmy Howard a Questionable Organizational Decision

The Red Wings’ large new contract for Jimmy Howard was shocking, given the goaltender is still largely unproven. (Kristen Jerkins, Flickr) Tim Thomas, Marc-Andre Fleury, Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, Ilya Bryzgalov, Miikka Kiprusoff, Niklas Backstrom, Ryan Miller, Cam Ward and Henrik Lundqvist. Above is a list of NHL goaltenders who currently make or have made at least $5 million...

Red Wings-Sharks game-day updates: Smith in, Tootoo out, Jensen in Frozen Four this eve

The Detroit Red Wings are preparing for what is essentially a must-win game against the San Jose Sharks tonight (7:30 PM EDT, FSD/CSN CA/97.1 FM), and while I don't expect to hear much of anything regarding TSN's Aaron Ward's report that the Wings may be close to re-signing Jimmy Howard, I will say this: until it's done--and the Windsor Star's Bob Duff tossed...

Sharks-Red Wings Preview

For a team that set an NHL record for consecutive home victories last season, the Detroit Red Wings' recent substandard play at Joe Louis Arena has been extremely uncharacteristic. That may need to change if they plan on extending their 21-season playoff streak. Detroit looks to get back on track Thursday night when it hosts the San Jose Sharks, who have had their share of...

Sharks down Red Wings in shootout

Patrick Marleau scored the winner in the shootout and had a short-handed goal early in the game, lifting the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. Antti Niemi made 27 saves through overtime, while Jimmy Howard stopped 28 shots for Detroit. Niemi got his glove on Niklas Kronwall's slap shot with 44 seconds left in the extra period, giving...

Red Wings-Sharks quick take: yet again, scoring problems doom the Wings

They just can't score. I don't know how else to put it. The Detroit Red Wings dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the San Jose Sharks, and with four straight road games coming up, starting with tomorrow night's tilt against Chicago (8:30 PM EDT, FSD Plus), the Wings... Either couldn't or wouldn't score. Despite a sterling performance by Howard, shootout excluded...
