Hall of Fame Goalie Patrick Roy was named head coach of the Avalanche (courtesy of wikipedia) Colorado fans you’re coach-less days are over! The Colorado Avalanche and Hall of Fame goalie Patrick Roy have both agreed to terms that would make Roy the Av’s new coach and VP of Hockey Operations as per the team’s website and nhl.com. Roy replaces Joe Sacco, who was fired late last month. A native of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, Roy brings nineteen years of goaltending experience, three Stanley Cups, 551 regular season wins, 151 playoff wins, and a slew of other achievements to a Avalanche team in need of change. Roy has spent the past eight seasons with the Quebec Ramparts of Roy and Detroit goalie Chris Osgood in a good ole fashioned Donny Brook (courtesy of sportsillistrated.com) the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Roy retired as the all time winningest goalie in NHL history with 551 wins (which has since been passed by Martin Brodeur) and is the ONLY player to win the Conn Smyth Trophy three times, in three different decades, and with two different teams. A 3rd round pick (51st overall) in the 1984 Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, Roy won a Stanley Cup with the Habs in both 1986 and 1993 before being traded to the Avalanche in 1996 after the infamous “Le Trade”  where he won two more Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001. Roy’s jersey hangs in the rafters of both the Pepsi Center and the Bell Centre and brings a long lasting and welcomed legacy back to Denver where he takes over a team that only won 16 games in a shortened season.
