Russia eliminated Team USA from the World Junior Championships in the quarterfinals on Thursday morning and they didn’t do it quietly. The reigning gold medal winners were sent packing following a 5-3 loss but, to make the loss even harder to swallow, the Russians weren’t necessarily humble winners. After Pavel Buchnevich‘s empty-net goal sealed the win, he skated by the American bench and celebrated like he just won a gold medal, a Stanley Cup and the lottery all in one. Buchnevich certainly wasn’t alone in the excessive celebration department, as friend of NESN Peter Blackburn was able to snipe a GIF of a Russian coach making an obscene gesture at the American bench (warning: gesture is very obscene), which can be seen here. Check out the GIF of the celebration below. Buchnevich, a New York Rangers prospect, scored two goals for Russia. Defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who was the Sabres’ 16th overall pick in 2013, scored two second-period power-play goals. Edmonton Oilers prospect and ...

Rangers place Taylor Pyatt on waivers

Per Larry Brooks, the Rangers have placed forward Taylor Pyatt on waivers. Pyatt has been a big disappointment this season and hasn’t played a game since the December 12 loss to Columbus. Pyatt has just one assist in his 22 games this season, while being a negative Corsi player (42.7% Corsi) with 34.5% offensive zone starts. As Kevin said this morning, it appears that Pyatt’s...

WATCH: Russian player taunts USA after winning at World Juniors, USA player retaliates

USA was down 4-3 to Russia at the U-20 World Junior Tournament with their goalie pulled when defenseman Matt Grzelcyk lost the puck, fell down and Russian forward Pavel Buchnevich buried it into the empty netter.  That wasn’t enough for Buchnevich who skated by the USA bench and taunting the team.  US forward Ryan Hartman wasn’t having any of it and managed to stick Buchnevich...

Rangers sign draft pick Anthony Duclair

Sorry for missing this yesterday, but in preparations for the storm I missed this signing. The Rangers signed 2013 3rd round pick –and big time talent– Anthony Duclair to an entry level deal yesterday. Duclair is the first Rangers draft pick from 2013 to sign a deal, although that comes as no surprise. Duclair was a huge talent headed into the draft, but questions about work...

Lineup notes: Cally in; Miller, Falk, Del Zotto out

Per the beat writers (multiple), Ryan Callahan will make his return tonight against the Penguins. J.T. Miller will be a healthy scratch, but it’s important to note that AV said the kid is playing well, and that it’s just a numbers game. Derick Brassard will move back to center. On defense, Justin Falk and Michael Del Zotto remain the healthy scratches. Tweet

Rangers mid-season grades: Glen Sather

The good ol’ days For those of you who missed it, we kicked off our annual mid-season grades this week with a review of Alain Vigneault, and have since followed that up with player grades for our defense, bottom six forwards, etc. Today, we’re going to grade the man who oversees it all — Glen Sather. For the purpose of this post, we’ll need to look back at 2013 in its entirety...

WJHC: Fly-by ends poorly for Russia's Pavel Buchnevich

This is the very reason that I would like the see the fly-by the benches curtailed. There was no reason for the Russian forward Pavel Buchnevich to skate by the American bench taunting the USA players like that. Obviously, Buchnevich would get his just deserts with the stick to upper body. Karma, maybe... I took a little bit of heat for the aricle, I also had some youth hockey coaches...

Rangers mid-season grades: the goaltenders

United in brutal paint jobs. So far, the crew here at BSB has covered the GM, Coach, defense and bottom six forwards in our mid-season grades series.  Today, we touch on something of a sore subject: the goaltending.  Even though Marty Biron played in several regular season games, he immediately retired and gave way to Cam Talbot.  For this reason, I’m not going to grade Marty...

2014 WJC: Buchnevich, Russia eliminate Skjei, USA

Pavel Buchnevich (2013, 3rd) had a pair of goals as Russia eliminated Brady Skjei (2012, 1st) and Team USA by a score of 5-3. Buchnevich scored Russia’s second and fifth (empty net) goals, also nabbing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty while celebrating in front of the USA bench. Russia advances to face the winner of the Slovakia/Canada game. Skjei notched an assist on USA’s...

Year In Review: New York Rangers

Year In Review: New York Rangers As 2013 winds down and everyone prepares for 2014, the NYSK writers wanted to take some time  to talk about the ups and downs of the past year (mostly downs for all of our teams). Today, we will look at the year in review for the New York Rangers. In this year-end special, we will talk about the good, the bad, and the outlook for 2014.  The Rangers...

Penguins claim Taylor Pyatt off waivers

The Taylor Pyatt era in New York has come to an end. The Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed the winger off waivers, absolving the Rangers of his $1.55 million cap hit and clearing a spot on the 50 man reserve list. Over his 70 games for the Rangers, Pyatt was a pretty big disappointment, putting together a line of 6-6-12 over the season and a half. Tweet

Richards' shootout goal lifts Rangers over Panthers

Brad Richards scored the lone goal in the shootout, and the New York Rangers rallied to beat the Florida Panthers 2-1 on Tuesday night. Richards beat Tim Thomas with a wrist shot to the top left corner after Thomas stopped the first two New York attempts in the tiebreaker. Henrik Lundqvist made a save against Brad Boyes to seal the Rangers' victory. New York defenseman Dan...

Rangers waive Taylor Pyatt

According to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, the New York Rangers have put 32-year-old forward Taylor Pyatt on waivers. Pyatt, who is in the final year of a two-year, $3.1 million contract with the Rangers, has no goals and one assist in 22 games. He hasn’t played since December 12 against Columbus.

Henrik Lundqvist Will Pay Tribute to Yankees Legends With Special Mask For Rangers’ Stadium Series Games (Photo)

New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist wears some of the most creative masks in the NHL, but his latest design that will be used in the team’s upcoming Stadium Series games might be his best yet. The Rangers will take on the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders in a pair of outdoor games on Jan. 26 and Jan. 29, respectively, with Yankee Stadium in New York playing host...

US Braintrust Names Olympic Squad

Following the 2014 Winter Classic on New Year’s Day, Team USA announced the 25-man roster that will head to Sochi next month in pursuit of Olympic gold. Three Rangers made the team. Ryan McDonagh, an early favorite given his skating ability and the larger ice surface the games will be played on, will be counted […]
