Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller had a candid response when informed of Capitals center Brooks Laich's guarantee that Washington was going to make the playoffs. Miller said he doesn't think Laich is Mark Messier, referring to the former New York Rangers captain hours after Laich made his comments on Washington's The Fan radio Wednesday. Buckle up, because the thrilling, topsy-turvy race between Washington and Buffalo for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff spot is showing no signs of letting up in the final days of the season. The Sabres did their part to stay in the hunt by mounting a frantic comeback in a 6-5 overtime win over Toronto on Tuesday. That pulled Buffalo even with Washington. Both teams have two games left, with the Capitals holding the tiebreaker. While trailing the New Jersey Devils, 3-2, in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals, Messier famously guaranteed a win. He scored a hat trick in Game 6, and New York won the series in seven.

Miller mocks Laich's playoff guarantee

Sabres goalie Ryan Miller had a candid response when informed of Capitals forward Brooks Laich's guarantee that Washington was going to make the playoffs. ''I don't think he's Mark Messier,'' Miller said. Ouch. Miller, of course, was referring to Messier, the former Rangers captain, who famously guaranteed a win with New York trailing New Jersey 3-2...

Ryan Miller Critics, Where Is Your Focus?

After a rough weekend for the Sabres, when so many aspects of the team’s performance were worthy of scrutiny, the local sports talk radio station spent about 99% of its airtime yesterday talking about the backup goaltender. Sportswriters pounced on another opportunity to trash Ryan Miller, and antagonist fans with an unconditional disdain for the franchise netminder ate it right...

Should The Whistle Have Been Blown? Breaking Down The Controversial Game-Tying Goal

It’s by far the goal of the season for the Buffalo Sabres, but it could very well be the play that everyone remembers as the goal that started the final run to the playoffs. With two minutes remaining in what seemed to be Buffalo’s second straight loss to the Leafs and final nail in their playoff coffin, Jordan Leopold become entrenched in Sabres lore forever. In the midst of...

From Hell to Breakfast: A Review of the Sabres 11-12 Season

And at your funeralI'll sing the requiem.     There will be no banners raised into the FN Center's venerable rafters, no majestic chronicle of the season's better moments, no town heroes; nothing, really, in the words of the celebrated Rick Jeanerette, "for the highlight reel".  I'm sitting here, writing this, listening to the songs from bands I...

Buffalo Sabre Ryan Miller Turned Washington Capital Brooks Laich Into Mark Messier

During a radio appearance on Washington, DC's 106.7 The Fan on Wednesday, Washington Capital center and alternate captain Brooks Laich expressed his confidence in his team's postseason ambitions, despite a devastating regulation loss to division rival Tampa Bay only two nights earlier:"We're not talking worst-case scenario.  We're making the playoffs." ...

GARTH: Not Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Its Game 81 of the season. Biggest game of the season for the never-say-die Sabres, who are playing in the very same building tonight where their playoff hopes were crushed in the elimination game seven in last Spring's playoffs. Its not always sunny in Philadelphia for Ryan Miller and the Sabres. **** I've been asked by many a nervous Sabre fan in the past...

Mike Augello: The Mutual Benefit Society; Leafs Vs Sabres

There is a conflict of emotions for many in Leafs Nation as their club faces the Buffalo Sabres in the second of the home-and-home matchup at the First Niagara Center tonight. For those who bleed Blue-and-White, most of the emotional attachment to winning games went out the window weeks ago and with just three games left on the schedule, the only accomplishment to be made is to...

Ziggy-Zaki Ziggy-Zaki ROY ROY ROY!

I have to admit I was all prepared to write the eulogy for the 2011-2012 Buffalo Sabres.  The last score I saw before writing this was 3-0 Leafs in the 2nd Period.  I had the title all lined up and everything:  ‘Buffalo Scat’.  But then the Leafs (perhaps acquiesing to the Toronto fan base who want a higher draft pick), decided to cough up not only a 3-0 lead, but also leads...

Flyers Down Sabres in "Irrelevant" Game 81 To Clinch 5th Seed, Pre-Game Awards Presented

Coming into Thursday night, the Flyers still had a legitimate chance at obtaining home ice advantage. All they had to do was take care of business against the Buffalo Sabres (who were fighting for their playoff lives themselves) and take down the Penguins on Saturday. The Flyers certainly did what they needed to do, downing the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in dramatic fashion. Matt Read'...
