Buffalo Sabres right wing Ville Leino received a one-game suspension from the NHL after he leveled Philadelphia Flyers rookie Matt Read with an elbow to the head.
Read was not injured during the third-period altercation on Wednesday and no penalty was called on the play.
"Even though we view this not as an intentional check but as one player stealing the puck from another player, the fact remains that Leino's elbow recklessly makes Read's head the principal point of contact," NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan said on Thursday.
Leino will miss Friday's game against the Florida Panthers. He is eligible to return Saturday when Buffalo hosts the New York Rangers.
Signed to a massive six-year, $27 million contract in the offseason, Leino has collected just three goals, seven assists and four penalty minutes with Buffalo.
