Brendan Shanahan, you are nothing more than Gary Bettman’s *****.  You’ve sold out to The Agenda and you’re wrapped in a soiled nighty made of hypocrisy. How do you spew the wholesome all year? How do you get in front of the cameras where you’ve always pined to be and literally claim that head shots are the number 1 priority of your office…and then fine Shea Weber $2,500 for what he did, with two hands, to Hank Zetterberg’s head? When Shanahan was directed by the midget commissioner, the absolute worst in all of sports, to swallow hard and continue the Anti-Wing campaign Bettman’s soaped himself in for more than a decade, he should have quit.  He knew it. We know it. Everyone in hockey (fans, writers, execs) all know it: this decision was as laughable as it was predictable.Continue reading "Sale of Shanny’s Soul Is Final"

Brendan Shanahan's First Season as NHL's Director of Player Safety Includes 44 Suspensions, Plenty of Debate (Videos)

Brendan Shanahan was a hot topic around the league during his first season as the NHL's senior vice president of player safety. Colin Campbell, who previously held the position, often made news himself, but Shanahan's tendency to rule with an iron fist immediately caught the attention of the league and the fans. In fact, Shanahan handed out nine suspensions before the regular...

Shanahan throws book at Bitz, suspends him for two games

So Brendan Shanahan the Vice President of the Department of Player Safety was busy the day after the first night of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. First Shanahan fined Nashville Predators defenseman Shew Weber the NHL maximum of $2,500.00 and then suspended Canucks forward Bryon Bitz for two games for boarding Kyle Clifford, Bitz was assessed a major penalty and given game...

The Games Are About To Begin

Top 5 storylines from Scott Burnside of ESPN, 1. Will Shanahan Bring the Iron Fist? How will the games be called and what kind of hammer will Lord of Discipline Brendan Shanahan wield should supplementary discipline be required in the playoffs? There were rumblings at the GMs’ meetings in Florida in March that GMs were unhappy that officials had let too much go in terms of obstruction...

GARTH: NHL Fine With Weber's Act

Attention NHLers competing in the 2012 playoffs: The cost of doing business has now been determined by Brendan Shanahan and the NHL. You feeling like banging the head of one of your opponents off the plexiglass just to "send a message"? Trying to settle a score with a guy you don't like? Why not dribble his head and face off the glass like a basketball on the...

Suspensions In The Playoffs

The NHL has had problems with consistency when suspending players for years.  With Brendan Shanahan coming in as the NHL’s vice president in charge of suspensions there was hope things would change.  The early return from the playoffs is that nothing has changed. One problem the NHL has long had with suspensions is that they have not wanted to appear to decide playoff series...

Bettman watches Panthers' return to playoffs

The first Florida Panthers' playoff game in 12 years was one that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman wouldn't miss. Bettman was in the crowd Friday night for Game 1 of Florida's Eastern Conference first-round series against New Jersey, a matchup that officially marked the end of what was the NHL's longest active playoff drought. The Panthers' most recent playoff game...

John Jaeckel: Pre-Game Riff

Follow me @jaeckel Just some quick riffs before the Hawks start their playoffs: Man, did I pick a bad night to get four hours sleep last night. Tomorrow will be brutal. Grande' Red-Eye on the way in to work, methinks. Brendan Shanahan, if you're not aware of this, you should be: the hockey world (well, mostly outside Nashville right now) is laughing at you. Get...

Dye: A rant-worthy week in review

This is one of the best times to be a sports fan - baseball is rolling, the nightly thrills of playoff hockey are back, NFL draft speculation is rampant and the NBA playoffs are just around the corner - but Thursday was a day for ranting. Here's why: The NHL's self-proclaimed mission to clean up the cheap shots in its sport lost all credibility. The league had seemed...

"The Price of Greatness": Gary Bettman talks Crosby hate

Let me start by saying that I am not a believer in conspiracy theories, and that I'm usually the first to speak up in defense of Gary Bettman and the NHL whenever somebody starts the "Sidney Crosby and the Penguins are the league's pet project" or the "Gary Bettman's favorite son" talk. As much as it pains me to even write the words "in defense...

Paul McCann: Game Two Game Night in Smashville

Before I get started with previewing tonight’s game, I just have to say… Wow! The whining and carping from the media about the lack of suspension for Shea Weber is borderline silly. No one is saying that the play was legal, no one is saying “way to go Shea… keep doing that.” The message being sent by Brendan Shanahan is simply this… the play wasn’t...

Here’s some pics of the 21-foot, 6,600-pound Stanley Cup plopped down in Times Square

On Wednesday morning in New York, the NHL, along with broadcasting partner NBC, officially unveiled a ginormous Stanley Cup smack dab in the middle of Times Square in order to properly celebrate the start of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, former NHL stars and the real Stanley Cup were among the [...]

The Stanley Cup Fountain In Times Square

On Wednesday morning the NHL and NBC celebrated the Stanley Cup Playoffs in Times Square with a 21-foot tall, 6,600 lbs. replica of the Stanley Cup. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus, former NHLers Clark Gillies, Adam Graves, Grant Marshall and the actual Stanley Cup attended the festivities in New York City.

Why We Hate the Penguins

There are far too many reasons to count why we in Philadelphia can't stand the Penguins, and come to think of it, the entire city of Pittsburgh. The Pens are our rivals; our bitter cross-state enemies. The close proximity and frequency of competition play heavily into that rivalry, which sets the stage for what will be a legendary playoff series between the two teams. Hate is...

The Return of the Double Standard

Should Shea Weber have been suspended for mauling Henrik Zetterberg? (Nam Y. Huh, AP) by Rhys Richards (@RREsq) People in all walks of life methodically make decisions or choose actions in the name of building their reputations. Unfortunately, some learn that one bad decision or action can undercut months and even years of hard work such that a once sterling reputation cannot be...

Hey Pens Fans... WHY YOU HEFF TO BE MAD?

We could have made the title of this post game many different things: "The Comeback Kids Do It Again" "Killer B's Lead the Comeback: Brayden, Briere, Bryz" "Mr. Playoffs Makes His Presence Felt" "The Lavio-lifeline Saves The Day... Again" You get the point... But I do have one serious question to ask Penguins Nation right now:   Okay I...
