On Fan Appreciation Night, the Senators were at least able to serve up a victory. Erik Karlsson scored in the shootout to give the Senators a 2-1 victory to push the New Jersey Devils to 0-12 in the skills competition in front of a sellout of 19,240 at the Canadian Tire Centre. Robin Lehner’s 38 saves in regulation were the reason this one got to a shootout in the first place. He was solid in every aspect, shooting out his pads and glove to make the stops necessary to get the two points. Karlsson wore a huge smile after using a nifty move to put it home. “(The shootout) is a fun thing to do,” said Karlsson, who made only his second attempt of the season. “It feels like we’ve been pretty successful with it. It was nice to score. “We play this sport to win games even thought we haven’t done it on a regular basis this year. That’s what we’re going to keep playing for no matter where we are in the standings.” The fans didn’t even get a chance to see legendary Martin Brodeur in the New Jersey net. Instead, it was Cory Schneider who made 31 stops for the Devils with both teams playing out the string. Only Mike Hoffman was able to beat Schneider in regulation while Michael Ryder replied for the Devils. This one seemed destined to go to the extra period from the minute they dropped the puck. Lehner had to make a two big stops on Jaromir Jagr on a breakaway in OT and Andy Greene just as the two teams were winding up the third. There is no question Lehner brought his best effort. Karlsson was the fourth shooter and Lehner stopped every New Jersey player he faced. The Senators moved their record to .500 at home with a 17-17-6 record with only one game left here.
