Antii Niemi made 27 saves for his second shutout in two nights and the San Jose Sharks won their third straight game in regulation, beating the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 on Thursday. Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns each scored for the third consecutive game for the Sharks, who are on their longest winning streak since starting the season with seven straight wins. San Jose had won just three of its previous 25 games in regulation before this current streak that started with a home-and-home sweep of first-place Anaheim and ended with a shutout of the rival Red Wings. The Sharks have moved from ninth place to seventh in the Western Conference with the three wins this week, all coming after general manager Doug Wilson dealt bruising defender Douglas Murray to Pittsburgh for two draft picks. The Red Wings came into the game as the more rested team having had two days off since beating Phoenix on Monday night to improve to 3-0 on this four-game road trip. But they couldn't complete the p...

Sharks own Ducks again

Joe Pavelski scored a minute into the game to start a three-goal first period spree, Antti Niemi earned his second shutout of the season and the San Jose Sharks swept a home-and-home against first-place Anaheim by beating the Ducks 4-0 on Wednesday night. Patrick Marleau and Brent Burns also scored in the opening 10 minutes and Niemi made 22 saves for the Sharks, who have back-to...

Red Wings mid-day news: on Franzen, Filppula, Jarnkrok’s debut and the stifling Sharks

The Detroit Red Wings will fly back to Detroit around 12:45 PM EDT today, and won't arrive until just before 5 PM, and their most immediate concern involves the health of one Johan Franzen, who suffered a "lower-body injury" during last night's 2-0 loss against San Jose. The Free Press's Helene St. James reports that whatever's ailing Franzen is bad enough...

Datsyuk dekes Couture out of his skates

Pavel Datsyuk is a wizard with the puck. As countless defensemen from around the NHL can confirm, defending him is nearly an impossible task. Whatever you do, don't blink and don't lose your balance.  What happens when a forward tries his hand at defending the Detroit star? We found out when the Detroit Red Wings took on the San Jose Sharks and Logan Couture slid over...

Red Wings send Carlo Colaiacovo to Grand Rapids for conditioning

This is not the news regarding a Red Wings defenseman that I was expecting this morning: Wings assigned Carlo Colaiacovo to Grand Rapids for conditioning stint. He still counts toward their 23-man roster. — Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) March 29, 2013 Red Wings assign Colaiacoco to GR for conditioning stint — Ted Kulfan (@tkulfan) March 29, 2013 ...

Red Wings-Sharks quick take: self-inflicted wounds leave a ‘bitter taste’

In theory, the Detroit Red Wings and their fans should be happy as clams this morning. The Wings handed the Ducks back-to-back losses, took out the Coyotes, and, aside from Johan Franzen's "lower-body injury," mostly avoided the injury bug (see: Jakub Kindl taking a knee-on-knee hit and not getting seriously hurt) during their West Coast swing. The Wings took 6 of 8...

Khan: the Red Wings’ special teams are no longer weaknesses

The Red Wings are still 10 minutes away from landing in San Jose after spending last night in Phoenix, and there's no point in sitting on this story until the team practices at 2 or 3 PM PDT (see: 5 or 6 PM EDT), so... In an "on-day" article, MLive's Ansar Khan duly notes that the Red Wings' power play stank on ice early on,  as did the Wings' penatly...

Pavel Datsyuk Gave New Meaning To “Put Him On Skates”

You don’t see this happen that often in the NHL, but when it does it is a thing of beauty. Check out Pavel doing what he does best and in the process dropping Logan Couture to the ice. Pavel proceeded to pick up the broken ankles, tossed them in a bag, and then brought them home with him. [The Big Lead] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

Red Wings End Their Road Trip Sourly, 2-0 Loss

Sharks take a bite out of the Red Wings, ending their 3-game winning streak with a 2-0 shutout loss. Unlike this game was, I’ll try to keep this quick and painless. If you enjoy watching low-scoring, high defensive hockey games, then this one is all for you. Both teams were tight all the [...]

Red Wings-Sharks Preview

The Detroit Red Wings have revived their previously mediocre power play, and the now-potent unit is propelling them toward a strong finish. They're also playing particularly well on the road, something they'll try to continue Thursday night against a San Jose Sharks team that boasts one of the league's best penalty kills. The Red Wings (17-11-5) own the fifth spot in...

Red Wings vs Sharks Recap: 3.28.2013

That was a really boring game to watch. It didn’t seem to me that Detroit had very many quality scoring chances last night. Most of their shots came from the boards with no screen in front. Only one PP the whole game and it was ours. Very uneventful game. More after the jump: Howard doesn’t get much help these days and certainly doesn’t get much help in San Jose....
