Detroit Red Wings
San Jose Sharks
The Detroit Red Wings haven't looked very sharp in back-to-back losses on the road.
Having goaltender Jimmy Howard available with the surging San Jose Sharks coming to town Friday night may provide the stabilizing force they need to get back on track.
Detroit plays seven of its next eight at home, and Howard is back with the team after missing the last two games due to the birth of his son. In his absence, the Red Wings (5-2-0) were outscored 11-2 in losses to Washington on Saturday and previously winless Columbus on Tuesday.
Coach Mike Babcock plans to change some of his line combinations in preparation for San Jose, though he kept his top forward unit of Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and Danny Cleary intact in practice Wednesday.
The trio has three goals and six assists.
"We're not scoring. That's been the problem these last two games," Zetterberg told the team's official website. "We haven't been able to score goals. We've been in games, creating chances, but we can't put the puck behind him."
Cleary, who posted career highs of 26 goals and 46 points last season, has two assists in 2011-12 and has not recorded a point in his last five games.
"I hope he believes in our line," Cleary said of Babcock. "He believes in every player on this team. I think he's trying to find the best fit for each line. We need to get back to going really basic and really simple."
Having Howard back may provide a simple remedy, as backup Ty Conklin posted a 5.06 goals-against average and .821 save percentage in the two defeats. Howard is 4-0-0 with a 1.72 GAA on the season, but he's allowed nine goals in losing his last two regular-season starts against the Sharks.
Howard recorded a 2.49 GAA in last season's seven-game Western Conference semifinal loss to San Jose - the second straight year the Sharks eliminated the Red Wings from the playoffs.
San Jose (4-3-0) heads into the teams' first meeting since then on a three-game winning streak. The Sharks defeated Nashville 3-1 on Tuesday.
San Jose, halfway through a six-game road trip, got two goals from Joe Pavelski and one from Logan Couture in the victory.
Captain Joe Thornton notched his 700th assist on Pavelski's second goal, an empty-netter to seal the win.
Right wing Martin Havlat is starting to produce after missing the first four games with an upper-body injury, recording an assist in each of his three contests.
''He's a gifted player and that's why we got him here," coach Todd McLellan said.
Thornton has five goals and four assists in his last six regular-season games versus the Red Wings, and he added six assists against them in the playoffs.
Pavelski has four goals and two assists during San Jose's winning streak, though hasn't scored in his last eight regular-season games against Detroit.
Antti Niemi made 20 saves Tuesday and has a 1.95 GAA over the last three games, and he has dominated the Red Wings in his career.
Niemi is 5-1-1 with a 1.97 GAA in the regular season versus Detroit, and had a 2.36 GAA in last season's playoff series.
The Red Wings took the final two playoff games in Detroit after San Jose had won five of the previous six matchups at Joe Louis Arena, including the postseason.

We know a few things about Mike Modano:1. He's one of the best American-born hockey players ever. 2. He's married to an absolute fox in Willa Ford. 3. He didn't appreciate the Red Wings private team plane. 4. He should stuff his shorts this Halloween when he goes as RedFoo, half of the electropop duo LMFAO.Propers to SI.com's Jimmy Traina
DETROIT -- What a difference a week makes.
Seven days ago, the Red Wings were cruising along with a perfect 5-0 record. They had back-to-back shutouts, balanced scoring and a favorable schedule, which put them in their customary spot -- at or near the top of the NHL standings.
Two losses later -- to the elite-level Capitals and the hapless Blue Jackets, by a combined score of 11...
Popular Detroit Red Wings defender and twitter personality Mike Commodore was very confused after a high volume of negativity from Los Angeles Kings fans on Twitter yesterday.
The off-season acquisition of the Red Wings says he accidentally clicked “retweet” on an original tweet that questioned the integrity of L.A. as a hockey market.
Here’s the screen grab:
Pretty good effort from the Red Wings here. That Jiri Hudler is a card.
from Ansar Khan of Mlive, Productivity from the top line typically is not a problem for the Detroit Red Wings because whoever plays with Pavel Datsyuk usually flourishes.
But that hasn’t been the case this season. The Red Wings’ first unit has struggled, particularly Datsyuk’s linemates. Henrik Zetterberg has just one goal and one assist and Danny Cleary has no goals and two...
Mike Modano is known for being a talented former NHL star. But since he retired, he’s turned weird. Need evidence? Check out Mike Modano as the LMFAO guy picture below.
This Mike Modano picture has him in a tiny speedo and a big afro. Honestly, it’s disgusting. I could hardly look at the picture long enough to write this entry.
What’s up with Mike Modano? I thought he was a...
San Jose went into Joe Louis arena in Detroit and as expected added to the list of exciting Red Wings and Sharks games.
San Jose plays the Red Wings as tough as anybody in the NHL and tonight they grinded out a 4-2 win including an empty net goal. The numbers were almost even in all the departments that matter except face-offs, Detroit dominated that area. Even losing such an important cate...
Tonight Detroit faces the team who’s knocked them out of the playoffs the past two years, San Jose. The fact that Detroit’s lost to those not-so-loveable losers the past two seasons certainly irks me, but the fact that the Sharks couldn’t even do something worthwhile with the series victory makes it sting even more.
Prior to losing to the Sharks, if you beat Detroit in...
Having lost two games in a row, one to a very talented opponent and the other to a lesser foe, the Red Wings see the Sharks as a great chance for to rebound.
A pair of teams that have been heading in opposite directions lately will get together tonight, as the Detroit Red Wings host the San Jose Sharks at Joe Louis Arena.
