John Carlson, center, celebrates a goal with fellow New Jersey native James VanRiemsdyk of the Toronto Maple Leafs and fellow Leafs’ forward Phil Kessel in the Americans 7-1 rout of Slovakia (courtesy of CBS Boston) Two days down in Sochi for the Winter Olympics and the Washington Capitals’ five representatives made some noise on Day Two. Both John Carlson and Alex Ovechkin scored goals for their respective countries in their wins; both goals also started the scoring for both teams. Carlson’s goal came against the Slovakians and St. Louis Blues goaltender Jaroslav Halak at the 14:27 mark of the first period, opening the flood gates for the Americans who routed the Slovaks 7-1, scoring almost as many goals as the Denver Broncos did points in the Super Bowl! Halak was pulled in the 2nd period, and was replaced by Peter Budaj, who himself gave up two goals on two straight shots. Like his American teammate, Alexander Ovechkin’s first period goal would lead to a Russian victory over the upstart Slovenian team, who are making their Olympic debut. But unlike his American counterpart, Ovechkin’s Russian squad had the host fans holding their breath for most of the game. After The Great 8 took advantage of a two-on-one with Penguins star Evgeni “Geno” Malkin, the Slovenians scored two goals in the 2nd to remain within one after two periods; however all hopes of a Russian collapse that would have mirrored the fall of the Eastern Block died when Dallas Stars rookie Valeri Nichushkin gave Russia the insurance goal it needed in the third, surviving Los Angeles Kings star Anze Kopitar and the Slovenians 5-2. For Swedish teammates Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson, their game against fellow Caps teammate Martin Erat was a bit more quiet on all accounts as only one member of the team registered a point; if you guessed Nicklas Backstrom, you’re correct. If you guessed he registered an assist you’re also correct. Check out  Carlson’s goal below: and of course the Great 8′s (we at DC Sports Kings apologize for the poor quality of said video)
