Pro Sports Daily:
Taylor Hall has the makings of an NHL captain.
But it’s not going to happen yet.
On Sunday Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins announced Andrew Ference as the 14th captain in franchise history succeeding Shawn Horcoff.
Hall was considered to be among those in the running for the role.
“I think it’s great. He has a lot of experience in winning and that’s important for our group. We don’t really have a lot of that especially with the young guys here” Hall said. “He’s come in he’s really taken charge off-ice and on-ice he’s a really good guy and I think it’s the right move for us.”
Ference 34 was signed by the Oilers as a free agent this off-season after seven years with the Boston Bruins.
The local product brings a Stanley Cup ring 120 career playoff games and three finals appearances to Edmonton.
“He’s been great” Hall said. “Just being in the finals and winning a Cup that speaks for itself … he knows what it takes and that’s what we need in this room.

For those of you who are wondering, this is not a typo. The alternate captains are Jordan Eberle, Sam Gagner, Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nick Schultz, and Ryan Smyth.

photo via www.stamfordadvocate.comWhen Andrew Ference left the Bruins this offseason for the Edmonton Oilers, it was bitter sweet for him. He left a city where he was not only a fan favorite on the ice, but also off the ice, oftentimes seen riding his bike to Bruins practices, games, and always getting involved in the community. But he left for his hometown Oilers, a team he grew...
Dallas Eakins and the Edmonton Oilers have named newcomer Andrew Ference the 14th Captain in Oiler history.
The Oil signed Ference, the 34 year old Edmonton native, in large part because of his experience and reputation as a leader. Since coming back home to Edmonton he has been especially active in the community and in short order has displayed the qualities of leadership and...
To the Nattering Nabobs of Negativism of which I’m an occasional member this makes no sense.
The Edmonton Oilers have gone from 33-to-1 on June 25 to 25-to-1 on Sept. 1 to 20-to-1 to win the Stanley Cup on bodog.ca the eve of the NHL season.
The Oilers will start the season with a 37-year-old who looked like he was pretty much done last year playing on the first line. They have...

The Edmonton Oilers have fallen off the radar since 2006 when they were the Western Conference champions. However, former Oilers player and head coach Craig MacTavish, who brought Edmonton to the Stanley Cup final seven years ago, is back in town as the team’s new general manager. He is hoping to bring winning hockey back to Rexall Place, and the...
The Edmonton Oilers have named six alternate captains two days after naming Andrew Ference to the top job.
The alternates are:
First-year head coach Dallas Eakins trots through life to his own double-time cadence and carrying his own clean slate which is precisely how the Oilers want it.
This being Edmonton a sort of hockey Brigadoon where the 1980s glory days live forever Oilers Standard Time can take over which is understandable.
On Monday for example while the all-business Eakins put his club through...
After signing with the Oilers two months ago as a free agent, Andrew Ference has been named the 14th captain in franchise history.
While Edmonton is certainly happy with the 34-year-old leading their young team, Ference’s former club is also glad to hear the news. Claude Julien thought the veteran defenseman had an opportunity to become a captain once he signed with the Oilers...
When Sam Gagner was forced to undergo surgery to repair a broken jaw — an unnecessary unfortunate turn of events caused by the stick-wielding Zack Kassian of the Vancouver Canucks — Ryan Nugent-Hopkins did not alter his timeline.
He will continue to practise with the team and he’ll put in the necessary off-ice work to further strengthen his surgically repaired shoulder but...
"In professional sports, winning is the bottom line ⦠This isn't about winning one game or one season. We're going to bring this organization back so that we're in the mix to win every single year."
Of all the quotes that made their way through the Edmonton Oilers organization this summer, that was the one that stands head and shoulders above the rest...
The Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets own the NHL's two longest active postseason droughts.
They hope their first seasons in different divisions will help bring them better fortune.
Edmonton hosts Winnipeg on Tuesday night in both clubs' openers.
The Oilers have suffered through a seven-year playoff drought - the longest in the league - after losing Game 7 of the 2006...
With the departure of Andrew Ference left a question in the minds of Bruins fans:
Who will wear Ference's A?
Well that question has been answered!
Coach said David Krejci has been given the other "A" for the season; will alternate with Chris Kelly ^CS

There you go. David Krejci will wear Ference...
In the season preview, we could’ve expected both teams to be fun to watch and score a lot of goals, that’s what we saw tonight in Edmonton. The Oilers were without C’s Sam Gagner, and star franchise forward Ryan Nugent Hopkins. So in a de-facto sort of way, Taylor Hall had to be 1st line […]
