Could this be Ryan Miller’s final season in Buffalo? Photo: Jim McIsaac, Getty Images 10. Ryan Miller, G, Buffalo Sabres Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Ryan Miller, Vezina Trophy winner in 2008 as the NHL’s best goalie, has suffered a steady decline in play the past few seasons. As a result, the Sabres have missed the playoffs each of the last three years. Yahoo Sports recently ranked Miller as only the 16th best goaltender in the league. If Miller wants to get back to helping the Sabres, he needs to elevate his play- but not for the reasons you might think. See, Miller needs to play well enough, but not to get the Sabres back into the playoffs- but so that he becomes an attractive trade option. Buffalo is rebuilding, and needs to deal their once-franchise goaltender for a few picks and/or prospects before he walks as a free agent at the end of the year. If Miller can get back to being even half the goalie he was in 2008, he could be dealt to a contending team in need of a goalie. Philadelphia’s an option; so is Pittsburgh if Marc-Andre Fleury continues his erratic play. Dark horse candidate: Edmonton, if they can get all that young talent to finally gel.

Foligno likely to miss Sabres' opener

Injured Buffalo Sabres forward Marcus Foligno did not practice with the team Monday and head coach Ron Rolston said it's unlikely he'll play in Wednesday's season opener in Detroit. ''I don't see it Wednesday,'' said Sabres head coach Ron Rolston. ''I think he'll probably be in a position tomorrow where he can practice but I don't...

Sabres Name Steve Ott, Thomas Vanek Captains, Duo Will Split Duties Between Home and Away Games

The Buffalo Sabres have had an interesting offseason, which centered mainly around the fact that they unveiled arguably the worst jersey in the history of sports. They announced another odd decision Tuesday. The club announced its captain on Tuesday with a bit of a catch. Every other team in the NHL has one captain, one leader who wears that “C” on his sweater. The Sabres, however...

Buffalo Sabres name Steve Ott, Thomas Vanek co-captains

The Buffalo Sabres will have two captains heading into the new season as the team announced Thomas Vanek will wear the C at home while Steve Ott will do so on the road. Meanwhile defenseman Christian Ehrhoff will serve as the team's alternate captain for all games. This move is a bit unconventional but may be born out of uncertainty. Vanek's contract with the Sabres is up...

Foligno out Wednesday, may miss more time

Buffalo Sabres coach Ron Rolston said after practice Tuesday at First Niagara Center that forward Marcus Foligno will not play in the team's season opener against Detroit. Foligno sustained an upper-body strain in a preseason game on Sept. 22 against Toronto and has not participated in a full practice since. He's worked with the team's power play units the last few days...

Buffalo Will Have Road And Home Captains

BUFFALO, N.Y. (October 1, 2013) --- Buffalo Sabres head coach Ron Rolston today announced he has named forwards Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott team captains. Vanek will serve as captain for home games and Ott will serve as captain for away games. Rolston has also named Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff the team’s alternate captain for all games.

Rolston’s pick for Sabres’ ‘C’ is a split decision

Practice ended at First Niagara Center and Ron Rolston gathered the Buffalo Sabres around him at center ice late Tuesday morning. But what’s normally a 5-minute chat might have lasted 30 seconds because Rolston ushered the players into the locker room for a meeting. With jokes flying on Twitter and from the media waiting outside about Papal white smoke emerging some hoots and...

Buffalo Sabres Announce New Captains

(Photo Credit: Dan Hickling) After months of speculation since the trade of Jason Pominville, head coach Ron Rolston has named the new, full-time captain of the Buffalo Sabres. Or should I say captains. That’s right, the Buffalo Sabres have named Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott co-captains for the 2013-2014 season that opens officially for the team tomorrow night against Detroit. Both...

Fighting The Standard In The NHL’s Atlantic Division

I can’t help but think back to the night Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins took a run at Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller early in the 2011-12 NHL season. Goalies are typically off limits, as in, most players in…Read more →The post Fighting The Standard In The NHL’s Atlantic Division appeared first on The Hockey Daily.
