Through 14 games in the lockout-shortened NHL season, the Buffalo Sabres sit at 5-8-1. That record is good for just 11 points and a last-place standing in the Eastern Conference. Buffalo already trails the division leading-Bruins by seven points, and a loss on home ice tonight could put them in some very hot water. There have been various reasons for the Sabres’ struggles so far, however it is tough to pick the No.1 issue. Any time a team is struggling, the head coach is usually the first to end up on the hot seat. Already Lindy Ruff knows that the pressure is on. Since winning the Northeast Division title in 2009-10, Buffalo has played sub-.500 hockey and made the playoffs just once, where they were bounced by Philadelphia. Ruff has not been the only Sabre who has taken criticism, though. Drew Stafford and Tyler Myers have both struggled mightily for Buffalo. Myers has been a healthy scratch for two games this season and is an abysmal minus-9 in the 12 games he has played. Myers’ s...

Ryan Miller Plays ‘Hot Seat Helper’ As Desperate Sabres Save Lindy Ruff’s Job With Comeback (Video)

Things certainly looked bleak for the Buffalo Sabres after two periods. The Bruins led, Ryan Miller was under siege and if things didn’t turn around, head coach Lindy Ruff might have very soon found himself on the unemployment line. Everything changed in the third period, when the Sabres roared back to overtake the Bruins and keep Ruff on the bench for at least one game more....

Drew Stafford Happy To Have Drought Over

When Drew Stafford scored 3:24 into the first period on Friday night, there was no one happier in the arena than he was to finally get one to go his way. “Obviously, that’s something I’ve been working for,” said Stafford, who donned the team’s brown fur coat that is given to their MVP of the night. “Finally it’s nice to get rewarded; now hopefully it floodgates.”...

Busting The Compacted Schedule Myth

Are you a frustrated Sabres fan?  Tired of wasting time by the water cooler arguing about Thomas Vanek's ice time or Tyler Ennis' lack of faceoff proficiency?  Want to look hockey-smart in front of your friends and co-workers?  Approach them with this ice-cold nugget of trivia: What are the Buffalo Sabres currently doing, from February 1st to April 8th, for the third...

GARTH: Weber Scratched

1st Period: ________________________________________________________________________ Sabres Scratches: In a surprise move, Lindy Ruff is healthy scratching robust, burly D Mike Weber. Cody McCormick and TJ Brennan will also sit this one out. Why is Lindy compromising the grit and tenacity of his lineup by sitting a guy who has arguably been his...

Keys to The Game Vs. Buffalo

Buffalo is a nice city. Just ask the Bruins. They have to pack up and go back to Buffalo for the second time in three games, all in the same week. The last time the two teams met the Bruins beat the Sabres 3-1 and overpowered the weak Sabres team. Both teams have only played one game since their last meeting. The Bruins lost in overtime to the New York Rangers in a thrilling game...

Luck On The Side Of The Sabres As They Defeat Boston

If there was an honor for being the luckiest team in the NHL, the Buffalo Sabres might be the front runners for that award. Multiple times this season Buffalo has been bailed out of their awful decisions, and has found itself in contention for a victory even though it was playing awful hockey. On Friday, it happened again. Despite an overly poor outing in the second period, and other...

12. Boston Bruins at Buffalo Sabres

Didn't we just play these guys? I feel like the Bruins February schedule is home vs NYR, then at Buffalo, then at NYR, then home against Buffalo - rinse and repeat. I'm not complaining though because playing Buffalo is like Michael Jordan dominating a wheelchair basketball game. For a team I picked to finish on top of the Northeast Division - they're ******* terrible...

GARTH: Sekera Doubtful

Sabres D Reggie Sekera is doubtful for the Pens game on Sunday afternoon, according to Lindy Ruff. Sekera suffered a leg injury when he was checked innocently by Boston's Shawn Thornton on Friday night. Mike Weber was a healthy scratch vs. Boston. Weber will no doubt draw back in to the starting six D against his hometown Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon.

GARTH: I Heart Fundamentals

No other team in the 43 year history of the Buffalo Sabres has run the emotional and physical gauntlet of gutting out 14 games in 24 days. Thanks to the NHL lockout, the Sabres had to play the cards that they were dealt. The team didn’t skate on Wednesday. They practice today to prepare to avenge Sunday’s loss to the Bruins. The first 14 games of the season and dead and...

Third Period Dooms Bruins In 4-2 Loss To Sabres

Anton Khudobin skates away as the Sabres celebrate their third goal of the third period. If you turned the television off after the second period, you missed a lot. Through two periods, it looked as if the Bruins would beat the seemingly disinterested Buffalo Sabres with ease in front of their restless fans for the second time in less than a week. Then came the third, however, and...

Bears Fall in Toronto, 2-1

Drew MacIntyre gets his revenge. The post Bears Fall in Toronto, 2-1 appeared first on Capitals Outsider.

GARTH: Scratches

Cody McCormick is a thick, robust winger/centre who plays like a linebacker on ice. He’s very effective against the Boston Bruins during his Sabres career. Cody won’t score many goals or dangle enemy goalies, however, his true value to his team is to play the role of bar bouncer and to keep the Bruins honest. Looks Lindy Ruff will be sitting McCormick tonight, according...

Lindy's downward spiral

I was angry. The people around me were more melancholy. I stood in the crowd with my hands on my hips. The sun was shining in my eyes like no other day. It was gorgeous outside but I felt hideous inside. Lindy Ruff appeared at the podium. The crowd went wild. I was bored. Still angry. Still pissed off about what the NHL did to us, how Brett Hull's toe stomped out our dream...
