The NHL season is off to an fascinating start in both North America and Europe. Here some developments that jumped out: Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer opened with a shutout over the hated Canadiens. He picked where he left off last season, when he finished extremely well to take the No. 1 role. He also lost 20 pounds through offseason and that paid dividends, too. Conversely, my old friend Jacques Martin has some work to do with the sputtering Montreal offense. Power forward Erik Cole was the only notable addition up front. This team needs puck-rushing defenseman Andrei Markov to return from his knee injury ASAP. Claude Giroux broke out last year for the Flyers. They need even more from this season as he teams with yesteryear star Jaromir Jagr -- who looked very impression in his return to NHL action after his KHL vacation. So far so good for GM Paul Holmgren's major reconstruction. Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov faced a lot of pressure heading into his Philly debut. He shrugged all that off and delivered a stellar performance against the powerful Bruins. I love the Anze Kopitar line for the Kings. Anze Kopitar worked with Justin Williams and Simon Gagne. They clicked for a quick fore-check goal against the Rangers in Stockholm as LA skated circles around New York early on. Agitator Matt Cooke scored twice for the Penguins after promising to behave this season. We'll see about the latter issue as the year goes on, but Cooke made a nice offensive statement to open the season.
