Despite what many people who know would say to the contrary, I am not a negative person. With that being said I have a few things I would like to get off my chest regarding the current state of affairs in Penguins land. My biggest complaint is how is Craig Adams still on this roster but Joe Vitale, Lee Stempniak and Brian Gibbons are not?
Adams had Amnesty buyout written all over him and even though he only counted $700k against the cap, that amount could have allowed one of those three to be retained and all have a bigger upside than Adams. I have heard he is a great locker room presence and a leader. That is not enough to hold onto a possession black hole who brought almost nothing to the ice other than penalty killing acumen.
Although not eligible for an Amnesty buyout, Rob Scuderi could have been bought out despite the limited help it would offer beyond this season. The only reason I do not say should is because of the recovery timelines to Olli Maatta and Derrick Pouliot preventing coach Johnston from icing a complete defensive lineup to start the season. Which brings me to the abhorrent way management handled the firing of Dan Bylsma.
Should he have been fired? Absolutely. Should he have had to wait weeks to be let go? No. Would he have been hired by Washington? Possibly but if that was the reason for making him wait and I partially believe it was, who cares? He would be on a short leash more than likely and he would have to deal with the coach killer that is Alex Ovechkin. I would have welcomed it given who they brought in as free agents.
Having Orpik out there every shift being turn-styled by Sid or Geno because he refused to acknowledge his own player’s limitations would have brought a tear to my eye. I know these are not groundbreaking revelations but despite all of the good decisions made since the end of the season, there have been missteps that have me wary of just how this season will play out. As a fan, I am optimistic. As a writer I am objective and aware of the limitations of the current roster.
