The first piece has fallen for the Wings that may ultimately signal a league wide NHL lockout come mid September. The organization announced Thursday that they would cancel their annual prospects tournament amid the speculation that the league would be locked out due to the ongoing CBA crisis. Eight teams were scheduled to participate at the tournament including Detroit, the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. It was scheduled to take place between September 15th-19th in Traverse City, Michigan. “We have determined that it is in everyone’s best interest to cancel this year’s tournament,” Red Wings GM Ken Holland said in a statement. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has stated that if no new CBA is in place by September 15th the league would lockout the players.
