Ian White lunged headfirst across the crease, trying desperately to protect Detroit's one-goal lead in the third period. As the defenseman slid in front of the net, Dallas' Jamie Benn flipped the puck toward the goal. It hit White in the face and stayed out. ''He took one for the team, that's for sure,'' Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said. ''I think he saved a goal there.'' After White's big defensive play, the Red Wings added two insurance goals and went on to a 5-2 victory over the Stars. Johan Franzen, Darren Helm and Brad Stuart all scored in the third period for Detroit. White also had a goal in the second. The Red Wings have won four straight, part of a streaky start to their season. They won their first five games before an 0-5-1 stretch preceded this run. ''We have a lot of talent in here,'' Lidstrom said. ''I think we believed in ourselves when we hit that slump, but now, we're shooting t...

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings have made moves to replace defenseman Ian White on their upcoming road trip. Detroit has recalled defenseman Brendan Smith from the Grand Rapids Griffins and put forward Todd Bertuzzi on injured reserve for seven days. Smith won't play on a road trip that starts Tuesday night in St. Louis and ends Sunday against Anaheim. Smith will serve the...

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings have made moves to replace defenseman Ian White on their upcoming road trip.

Jamie Benn emerging into an NHL star

There were a lot of people who hadn't even heard of Jamie Benn last season. In fact, I picked him up from the free agent list for my fantasy team and since then, Benn has been one of my best players. This year I drafted the young forward in the 8th round at 111th overall in my one year league. The Stars center had 41 points in his first season in the NHL during 2009-10. Then last...

Howard earns another shutout

Jimmy Howard's name isn't on the NHL All-Star ballot. That didn't prevent him from shining against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night. Howard had a 24-save shutout to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Oilers 3-0. He insisted that being snubbed on the ballot, that lists 18 other goalies, doesn't motivate him. ''It doesn't bother me one bit,'&...

White's act of courage

DETROIT – On the surface it looked like another hockey player doing what’s necessary to help his team win. But what Ian White did Saturday was a true testament to the man and the type of team-player the Red Wings have in their 27-year-...

Stars can't get going against the Penguins, fall 3-1

Final Dallas Stars 1 - Pittsburgh Penguins 3 Coming into this game, I was worried about two things for Dallas. I was worried about Pittsburgh's suffocating defense and how good they were on the power-play. The Penguins used their defense and special teams to beat the Stars 3-1 last night. Dallas could never really get going in this game and it was apparent from puck drop to...

Babcock: Filppula has the inside track

Mike Babcock's message to Valtteri Filppula has been relentless: Go to the inside, and watch what happens. The Red Wings hold Filppula in high regard because he's about as all-around utilitarian as they come: penalty killer, power-play guy, speedy, great vision, outstanding passes.

Red Wings win 4th straight, top Stars 5-2

Johan Franzen, Darren Helm and Brad Stuart scored in the third period, and the Detroit Red Wings went on to a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

Watching how to handle adversity

Cory Emmerton won't be telling Nicklas Lidstrom or Pavel Datsyuk how to play anytime soon. He certainly wouldn't suggest to defenseman Brad Stuart or goal-scorer Johan Franzen to lift their game at any point.
