DETROIT -- He's won a Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs MVP and even an Olympic Gold medal. But Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has just one assist in four games of the Western Conference semifinals. And after Thursday's 2-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings in Game 4 , his team is one game away from elimination and his frustration is boiling over. That's because Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg -- who's also won a Stanley Cup, a Conn Smythe and an Olympic gold medal -- has taken residence in Toews' head. Zetterberg is preventing Toews from doing all of the things he's accustomed to doing on the ice. "Hes really good at that," Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson said of Zetterberg. "We saw that early and in previous years, too, when he played against (Pittsburgh captain Sidney) Crosby. "So we know that hes a pain in the ass for the other team and thats the way we like him." Ah, yes, Crosby, who had 15 goals and 31 assists in the 2008 playoffs. But only two of those goals and four of those assists came against the Wings in the Finals. Now Toews is getting the Crosby treatment and doesn't appear to be enjoying it very much. Toews took three penalties in the first 11 minutes of the second period Thursday. Two of those were high-sticking, the other hooking. "Im not going to say anything about the officiating," Toews said. "Obviously, I disagree with the calls, but it's in the heat of the moment. "They see what they see. Ive gotta be careful of my stick. That doesnt help my team, but I still think we played hard through it, found a way to stay in the game, killed off two big penalties." The Blackhawks killed off two of the penalties, but the Wings finally scored on the power play on the second of Toews' penalties, their first power-play goal of the series. With just a second remaining before Toews' return from the box, Jakub Kindl scored from just below the left circle at 10:03 of the second. "That was huge for all of us," Kindl said. "We knew we had to pick it up on our power play. Theyve been playing so good as a team on the PK. "This was the biggest game of my life so far and the biggest goal Ive had." Damien Brunner, playing his first season with Zetterberg, said he's glad he's not playing against him. "Unbelievable," Brunner said of Zetterberg's play. "He's making it hard on (Toews) and frustrating him as good as he can." As would be expected of the Wings' humble captain Zetterberg, he's downplaying the effect he's had on Toews. "It's a lot of emotions in playoffs," Zetterberg said. "He's a really good player. I didn't see the penalties, so I can't say it they were frustration penalties. "You got to be aware of him. He created a lot of chances today. Howie (Jimmy Howard) really saved us." Television replays showed Toews taking extra whacks with his stick at Zetterberg, with the referee in the middle of them, then again when the two were headed for their respective benches. "He (Zetterberg) plays the game really hard, makes it hard on the other team's centermen," Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. "He's been doing that all year for us. He's been outstanding." Although Zetterberg took a hooking penalty of his own, he and the other veterans on the Wings have been very disciplined, making sure not to overreact to being hooked or slashed. "You don't want to get too high or too low," Zetterberg said. "In the first series (against the Anaheim Ducks), it was a little up and down. We played one good game then one bad game. "We tried to be calm (Thursday), not get too fired up or caught up in the moment -- just play the way we should play. And if we do that, we'll have a good chance of winning." All Zetterberg has to do is stay in Toews' head one more game and the Red Wings will have won their way right into the conference final.

Jonathan Toews wants you to know that Jonathan Toews is a great player, and Toews will be fine

The Vancouver Sun's Cam Cole took note of the attention Jonathan Toews' shenanigans receieved from the Detroit press during and after the Red Wings' 2-0 win over Chicago on Thursday, as well as the after-the-fact comments about Toews losing his temper on Friday. So Cole attended the Blackhawks' Friday practice, and after asking Brent Seabrook whether he calmed Toews...

Jonathan Toews high stick on Justin Abdelkader...Was this Embellishment?

Former Fighting Sioux forward Jonathan Toews had a rough night for the Chicago Blackhawks, he beat a path to the penalty box, taking three minor penalties, this one was laughable based on some of the calls the on-ice officials have missed this season. Sure there was a penalty but, come on! Abdelkader sold this one big time with his Academy Award winning acting job. On this play,...

Red Wings-Blackhawks Preview

Jonathan Toews is going to play his usual minutes. Corey Crawford will be in goal. The lines will look largely the same. Don't expect any major changes for the Chicago Blackhawks when they try to extend their season in Game 5 of their second-round playoff series against Detroit on Saturday night. After three consecutive losses to the rolling Red Wings, Toews and Co. think they...

Wings special teams get it done

DETROIT -- Before their Western Conference semifinal series, Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said he believed special teams would be the difference against the Chicago Blackhawks. Looks like Zetterberg knew what he was talking about. The Blackhawks were perfect on the penalty kill this postseason -- until Thursday night. After going 0-for-12 in the first three games...

Red Wings force Blackhawks to make changes

Chicago -- While the Detroit Red Wings seem to have found combinations that work, the Chicago Blackhawks are going back to a once-successful combination out of desperation. After scoring just two goals in the last three games, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville is putting Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp together on the top line. "Its exciting," Kane said...

Old school T-Mac, Big Fat Bartolo Colon, and a Great Goalie Fight

It’s Friday, you ain’t got no job. You ain’t got **** to do….so let’s….read the Midday Cup Check. Blowing out the Candles Kris Draper, Detroit Red Wings stud, played 20 years in the league and helped the Red Wings win 4 cups. Not bad for a player acquired from the Winnipeg Jets (before they were Colorado, not after they were Atlanta first) in 1993 for the then-waiver...

This may be your ‘evening line’

The boss is under the weather and I'm feeling poorly enough that I'm going to take a "post-game nap," which I never do (would've done it had the Wings won). KK may be a little quiet tonight due to the so Paul and I will update the site with content as we are able. So I'll leave you with this "evening line," suggest that you vent away in the Red...

The Detroit Red Wings head into Game 5 against the Chicago Blackhawks tonight (8 PM EDT, NBC/CBC/97.1 FM, and FSD will air a post-game show) holding a 3 games to 1 series lead, but they face a strange and difficult opponent for several reasons: First, as the Hawks repeatedly mentioned on Friday, they rallied from a 3-0 series deficit against the Vancouver Canucks in 2011, and forced...

SHUTDOWN AND SHUTOUT: Red Wings push Blackhawks to the brink with 2-0 Game 4 win

First the Red Wings continued to shutdown the Blackhawks then they finished it by shutting them out. The NHL Network also filed a game...
