The British government is planning on outlaying upwards of £14 billion in order to properly stage the Olympics in London this summer—never mind that the Games are only expected to bring in £3-5 billion in tourist spending—and so, it seems that a number of British athletes are finding themselves out in the cold without any money for training for their events. We saw it with the women's beach volleyball teams and now the sprinters are in trouble too.

James Ellington, 26, is one of England's best sprinters (and coming off his best season yet) but he didn't have a sponsor and didn't have enough money to train, so he put himself up for auction on eBay. After 45 people bid over 10 days, Ellington managed to raise slightly over $50,000 after promising to wear advertising for whomever won the auction throughout his training and in all opportunities prior to and through the Olympics.

Now Ellington has enough cash on hand to finish his training and pay for travel, he better step up his game though if he wants to truly earn the money and get himself up on the podium.
